: trailer hitchless truck
nosliw 02-28-2005, 10:15 PM my truck didnt come with a trailer hitch. the salesman was telling stories about hitches being stolen in that particular lot , but danced around, avoiding saying that mine was stolen. i didnt think anything of it for some reason, when i was there buying my dmax i was too excited to worry about it:rolleyes: is my truck not set up to haul? am i entitled to a hitch? if not, then what is the stock hitch?
banshee1973 02-28-2005, 10:26 PM I would think it should come with one my did. Mine also came with the trailer brake harness did yours come with that? 2005 Duramax
MrsSpoolin 02-28-2005, 10:33 PM Do you mean the ball part, or the receiver?
nosliw 02-28-2005, 10:34 PM it doesnt have the ball part or the part that the ball part goes into. was that like an option that came with heavier duty rear springs or something and i got the wussy kind?
Look at the options on your window sticker to see if it has the tow package.
banshee1973 02-28-2005, 10:49 PM All I know is that I bought a Chevy 2005 Hd ext. cab short bed and mine came with one have you look under your truck to see if there was signs of one being installed?you can also look at your sticker that was on the window it will tell you if your truck had tow package installed.
nosliw 02-28-2005, 10:56 PM is there anything else that would go along with the towpackage? like something i can easily identify? id hate to have to dig that thing up.... and if it turns out i dont have it, can i install it? what does it consist of?
Ask someone to run a VIN check and ask for the options that came with the truck.
rangervx 02-28-2005, 11:04 PM your sure as heck entitled to it if it was to be on the truck, otherwise it is an option and dosen't come with truck as standard equip. Check the window sticker or options code label.
banshee1973 02-28-2005, 11:25 PM Did your truck come with the tow mirrors that extend out?
greencows00 03-01-2005, 12:34 AM mine wasnt standard when i got my dmax.. i made them put one on for free..
jmg343 03-01-2005, 12:45 AM mine didnt come with one either, or cab lights. I didnt realize till i got home either due to the excitement of my new truck. i never got to see the sticker because I grabbed my truck the minute it came off of the car carrier. how the hell do you sell a 1 ton truck, with a tow/haul switch, and no hitch and/or hitch reciever. I went back to make them give me one for free but it was too late already, no dice. Im gonna see if I cant have my vin# looked up though to see if I should have gotten one.

Look on the sticker in your glove compartment and see if this code is
listed. It will include the trailer hitch receiver mounted on the truck. It may or
may not also include the wiring harness, usually laying in the glove compartment, for hooking up an electric brake controller and a map fuse. GM has included this in most year trucks, but omitted it in some. Of course some dealers take em out and try selling them to you, these types need not apply for my business.
The trailering option does not include a trailer hitch ball of the shank (part ball bolts to).
jmg343 03-01-2005, 12:58 AM i gotta Z85...whats that mean? mine is 3 better than the Z82?
nosliw 03-01-2005, 02:12 AM Did your truck come with the tow mirrors that extend out?
yes
BK Tool 03-01-2005, 08:20 AM yesJust because you have extending mirrors, doesn't mean you have a tow package. I have the tow package, regular, power folding, heated mirrors.
I also have the snow prep package without the cab lights. Didn't want them, they look like sheet!
Goin Camping 03-01-2005, 08:22 AM i gotta Z85...whats that mean? mine is 3 better than the Z82?Z85 = Heavy Duty Suspension
Here is a link to a site listing a lot of RPO codes. http://gm-trucks.com/home/content/section/4/30/
jeazor 03-01-2005, 09:38 AM Most trucks in our area Northeast region come with a Heavy Duty Power Package RPO PDN which come with a trailer package, Locking rear diff, Duramax Engine, Allison Trans and High capicity air cleaner. Then you get a $1000 package discount. Give us your VIN # and I can tell you what your truck has.

McRat 03-01-2005, 10:22 AM Your engine, cooling system, transmission, are all set for towing.
To tell you the truth, I've never even seen a Duramax without a receiver. Or a Ford diesel either. I guess you can order them that way, but few dealers stock them.
MrsSpoolin 03-01-2005, 10:31 AM I dug out our sticker, it says "HD Trailering Equipment...$210.00" It also lists the trailer wiring harness, but the harness is standard equipment.
My '99 Ferd didn't come with a trailer hitch as part of the trailer prep pkg. Just trailer wiring and the plugs for a brake controller. Thought it was weird, but that's how it was at the time. The receiver hitch was another, separate option.
BTW, my truck came with the trailer tow pkg and has a factory receiver mounted. If its supposed to be there, make them replace it!
coyotekid 03-01-2005, 12:29 PM My '03 gasser had the RPO code for a receiver, but somebody forgot to install it in Mexico or wherever that piece of monkey spunk was cobbled together.
That was the beginning of the end with that blue lemon... in 9700 miles I had something like 8 dealer visits, one blown tranny, a new UCA, radio crapped out, leaky headlight, the list goes on...
But my D-Max is much better :)

The 2 i bought that was not even a question. Could be the dealer ordering at my dealership though.
bout $150 installed for a hitch. or at least that's what i paid over 4 years ago on a 1500.
Rockin 03-01-2005, 01:03 PM If you're going to tow heavy, you might be better off with an aftermarked receiver. Some folks have had problems with the GM receiver holding up. If you bought it though, get what you paid for.
Diesel Dragon 03-01-2005, 04:27 PM Acording to your option sheet your truck didn't come with the towing package. Go out and buy yourself a good aftermarket hitch from Reese, Hidden hitch, or Draw-tite. They all make a quality product with diffrent rating's that you can get to suit your needs. :grd:
Personally I took my factory hitch off and put a 2-1/2" Titan hitch on.

ShumDit 03-01-2005, 04:37 PM I have seen a new on the lot DMAX w/o a hitch. It had no carpets, no fender flares and manual transfer case. It was a 2002 GMC IIRC. The dealer did offer to put one on if I was serious about the truck ~ it would have taken much more to turn that cinderella into a princess that I would want. Agree ~ if you gotta kickout good cash ~ then get one of the better aftermakets instead.

anything else that was included in the tow package that i should get? how bout the wiring for brake lights? do i have to do a bunch of wiring and other bs like that?
and why would they give me extended mirrors and no tow package? :damnit1:
WYO_DMAX 03-02-2005, 08:59 AM If your hitch was stolen, the wiring for the trailer lights is probably still up under the rear of the truck. If not, they sell the trailer wiring harnesses as kits now, and it's a simple plug in installation.
I think it's a load of BS that a tow package is even an option on an HD pickup. Why else would you buy it if you didn't plan to tow at some point?
CrazyDaze 03-02-2005, 06:38 PM nosliw...too bad you are so far away! I took my OEM off as soon as I got the truck and put a Reese Titan on. If you want to pay the shipping, you can have it!
Oilbrnr 03-02-2005, 10:57 PM I took off my OEM too, and installed a Putnam XDR. Less $$$ than the Titan, higher rating and no adapter to worry about.
Rippem 03-03-2005, 02:20 AM Bingo, Putnam XDR here also. Solid drawbar (for those on an HD truck forum that don't know what that "ball thingy" is called), and a raw, heat treated, big shank 24K ball. I also used longer thicker backing plates on top of the frame, on the bottom against the hitch plates, and Grade eight 3/4 dia. bolt inch bolts w/lock washers and double nutted (gr.8 of course).
I tow a 200K boat with this thing, I wouldn't take my utility trailer around the block with that stock hitch. Consider it a blessing it's missing, get a real receiver!
PDN power pack for ordering discount does not include Z82 trailering. This misinformation coming from a dealer or salesman ?

yikes id imagine shipping would be a bit, but thanks a million for the offer!
i dont really need much more than the stocker i dont think. i mean, if the aftermarket replacement is cheaper than oem (wouldnt surprise me) then i would go for it. but seeing on how all i'll be towing right now is a trailer full of atv's and dirtbikes, and hauling around garbage to the dump i dont think i need a really heavy duty one.
thanks for the replies, i guess i'll get on the phone with the dealership and see what happens.
Diesel Dragon 03-03-2005, 07:30 PM Oilbrnr and Rippem,
I looked on the Putnam website and saw the XDR hitch with it's 15,000 lb rating, but the highest rated 2" drawbar (solid or hollow) that they had was only rated for 10,000 lb. Did you go to another manufacturer for a Higher rated draw bar to match the Hitch?
DD
Lawnboy 03-03-2005, 10:52 PM They're an option because the 5th wheeler guys don't have a use for a reciever hitch!
02Sloopy 03-04-2005, 04:28 PM You are so right Lawnboy.
Oilbrnr 03-04-2005, 04:42 PM D Dragon,
Without going to look at Putnam's sight, your probably looking at non weight distributing bars, which may be limited to 10k but that is more a function of the hitch itself.
My WD drawbar is rated at 1,400 tongue 14k total trailer weight.
DMAX/Hemi 03-04-2005, 06:15 PM As Lawnboy said, some are ordered for the lot without a hitch, to tow a fifth wheel. When I began looking for a Dmax last January, I found what I thought was the perfect truck at the dealer near work, but it didn't have a hitch. I considered buying an aftermarket hitch, but ordered my truck instead from my local dealer instead. Wound up saving another three grand as well buying there.
