: Facts on the new 6-speed Allison ?
Frank_EP 02-28-2005, 03:51 PM Although we have heard about it here, a reference at RV.net shows the actual PDF of some literature on the new GM application for the 6-speed Allison 1000. There are new, enhanced, shift modes. Great. There is no info on the gear ratio. The Allison web site does not even mention a 6 speed A1000.
But what about the gear ratio? The major benefit of another gear is to let Dmax owners drive at torque peak on the highway. But we need to known the gear ratio in 6th. Does anybody know it?
Will the 6-speed be available with 3.73?
Will the 4.10 gear set be available?
Will the 4.10 in 6th be a lower RPM than the 3.73 in 5th?
LanduytG 02-28-2005, 04:58 PM Same ratio except that 6th gear is .61, this will give you another 10% decrease in engine speed which will bring up economy. Should bring the fat of the torque curve to about 70mph or so. Which IMHO is pleaty fast to be towing a heavy load.

Got Diesel? 02-28-2005, 05:17 PM Now if it would only work out that I can activate the sixth gear on my transmission without having to trade up, I'd get excited.
Z71 Grizzly 02-28-2005, 07:42 PM LanduytG knows I think but won't say yet.
duramaximizer 02-28-2005, 11:35 PM LanduytG knows I think but won't say yet.
i am sure it could be upgraded from the way it sounds to me. but this is only speculation on my part.
either way this trans setup :ro) s
BROKER 03-01-2005, 08:53 AM Looks good on paper..................http://www.lubricationspecialistllc.com/allison06.pdf
Soooooo will they get around to making the transmission fully capable in all gears?? Wouldn't that be novel? :shake:
Cougar281 03-10-2005, 02:43 PM When the ability comes to upgrade our current Allisons to enable the 6th gear, I assume it will take (among other things) a TCM flash or replacement. Will that enable all the other new features that the 2006 will have (Range selestion {I think this one was a yes}, Cruise grade braking {I'm not sure if we currently have this}, Heater performance, and Low Traction Mode)?
OmyLLwhy 03-10-2005, 05:14 PM We have two new rigs at work with allison auto trannys, they had the wrong rearend gears spec'd so a detroit diesel rep is going to add the "sixth" gear with some type of hand held device that flashes the computer. sure would be cool if we could do the same for the 1000's
StraitDiesel 03-10-2005, 06:37 PM very interesting... that'd be the cat's a$$ to just reflash the tcm for the sixth gear.
Dan
Duratys 03-10-2005, 08:55 PM If thats the case then why not just offer it as an upgrade or better yet standard equip. I cant see it being that easy.
StraitDiesel 03-10-2005, 09:00 PM I doubt it's that easy either, but it sure would be nice for everyone of us...

WAskier 03-11-2005, 01:14 AM Don't quote me on this but I seem to remember one of the techs saying something about our allisons not having the right valvebodies to enable the 6th gear. It was a long time ago that i read that so I don't remember the details. A reflash and walla a 6th gear would be sweet though :D
AbsoluteGMC 03-20-2005, 01:43 AM The six speed may have the same cse but the internals will be different.
Differnet valve bodies, gears, solennoids, etc.
I spoke with a tech at allison and he said that If you were to look at a series 1000 and 2000 and 2400 sitting on the floor you could not tell which was which. Does anyone know what a series 3000 case looks like? If it looks like the 1000 then this may be the trans that gm is planning to use (best guess) due to the fact that it is a six speed.
Ratios are like this for allison automatics
5 Speed
1st - 3.10
2nd - 1.81
3rd - 1.41
4th - 1.00
5th - .71
Reverse - 4.49
6 speed
1st - 3.49
2nd - 1.86
3rd - 1.41
4th - 1.00
5th - .75
6th - .65
Reverse - 5.03
coyotekid 03-20-2005, 01:50 AM So if the ratios are true, then it obviously won't be a plug and play type deal to convert a 5 speed.

That's not what several of the techs have said, including Eric, I believe. They've said that the 6th gear is there, just not enabled electrically/hydraulically.
crashpilot 03-21-2005, 04:37 PM DAMMIT!!!! I've spent a lot of time researching my new pickup. Saving my $$, reading all the Powerstroke vs. Cummins vs. Duramax stuff, then waited for the LLY to make good. So I went out 2 weeks ago and bought the pickup I've been wasting company time over for the last few years. NOW I find out about the 6 speed Allison. -:t
Anybody want to buy a barely used 2005 Silverado?? LOL
