: Predator, Stock or PPE?
Parker44 07-24-2008, 02:02 AM My truck has only gotten 14.5 mpg since putting on the Predator with a 65hp tune. Today I put the stock tune back in the truck, egt's are a bit higher, the boost is 4psi lower while on the freeway at a constant speed, and it shifts very positive......much better than with the tune.
My question is I was thinking about getting a PPE programmer as I have heard only good things about them. Went there today and they recommended the level 3 160 hp tune for my daily driver. I have already upgraded the transmission with a shift kit and new ats torque converter.
Has anyone else felt like their truck was better without the program, or was my predator just a bad tune????
KevinsDMAX 07-24-2008, 07:26 AM What kind of mpg's did your truck get before installing the predator. I have a PPE standard and have used the level 1 and 2 and haven't seen an increase in MPG's.
Now for shifting, all is great with or without the PPE.
Remember that the Predator doesn't have the ability to "relearn" the trany or does it?

Is this why the predator can hurt the trans quick?? Hmm

ChevyDieselLLY 07-25-2008, 07:13 PM have you given EFI Live any thought? i get 20mpg in the city..... just my 2 cents
Bighickdogg426 07-25-2008, 10:24 PM i have a stock tranny and i am wanting more smoke, a little more power, better fuel milage, and DEF. tranny safe... my main two choices are PPE standard and duramilage, you guys have and recomendations
ChevyDieselLLY 07-26-2008, 11:52 AM PPE is known for power and smoke. heard you can gain 1-2 mpg.just make sure you get the one you can upgrade down the road once you have a built tranny. that why you wont have to buy something new.
Bighickdogg426 07-26-2008, 02:27 PM but what setting could i run it on and be safe, and have you looked into the duramilage program, also what about the quadzilla for my needs
ChevyDieselLLY 07-27-2008, 11:13 AM i would go with level 2 for daily driving. the other programers i never looked into, didnt have the power i wanted. do you ever plain on doing any work to your trans?

Yeesh.... where to begin?
First... change the tune with any tuner and add more power and your Allison tranny will have to relearn. It's the tranny, not the tuner, that has to relearn. I've heard all sorts of magic numbers about how many shifts, how many days, etc... but figure a couple of days driving with the new tune in and your tranny will be as happy as a clam and the shifting will be just fine.
Second - Parker - fill out your sig so we can see what you're driving and what else you've already done to the truck. I was getting 16-17 mpg before adding my Predator... when I was totally stock. The +65 hp tune bought me another 2-3 mpg. I actually get my best mileage as far as I can tell with the +85 hp tune, but you must have an exhaust to run this one, otherwise you'll fry your turbo.
Third - any tuner can tear up your tranny.
Fourth - the Predator tune is about as safe a tuner as you can buy. You can spend a ton of money on other tuners (and if you're thinking about PPE, you will), but for the money, Predator is great. You don't hear anybody complaining about how their Predator tune all of a sudden starts wreaking havoc with their trucks (like Edge). Not casting dispursions on Edge products, but they have been known to go south for no apparent reason.
Finally - mileage can be a real elusive booger. Unless you are meticulous and you change only one thing at a time and monitor the things carefully, you're most likely gonna be disappointed. You'll find yourself throwing things at the problem and it will seem like nothing has any effects. Take a look at my sig. On the highway I can get better than 22 mpg. But all I have to do is change my driving habits slightly and my mileage is 18.
Bighickdogg426 07-27-2008, 11:35 PM witch of these would give me the most smoke but still be safe for me, i hardly ever tow anything and i ocasionally run it hard but usually drive like a grandpa
ChevyDieselLLY 07-28-2008, 11:42 AM i would check out PPE Standard. im pretty sure you can also upgrade it if you ever choice to do so. i wouldnt go over level 2 for getting into it hard. may cause you to put the trans in limp mode. just remember smoke is just used diesel so its not gonna help your mpg out.
Bighickdogg426 07-28-2008, 02:19 PM oh i know that, but it sure does look cool lol (i have a coal truck and im addicted to black smoke)
Bighickdogg426 07-28-2008, 02:30 PM chevydiesellly who tuned for you to get 25+, i really wouldn't mind that, what did they charge
ChevyDieselLLY 07-28-2008, 04:32 PM the boys over at Diesel Addiction take care of all my tuning needs. Dustin (OthrGrl) or Winston (Pville) both are members here. send them a pm and they will take care of you.
Bighickdogg426 07-28-2008, 04:49 PM thanks a bunch man, you're awesome
