: lb7 low power?

I need some help for a buddy of mine.
He has an 02 2500 2wd lb7. He say it is way low on power. He says he is not getting much boost. He has called garret and they told him he needs a turbo. He also told me the truck is not blowing black smoke. I don't think he needs a turbo. I would think it should be blowing all kinds of smoke under a load. I think it is not getting fuel. Does anybody have any ideas. Truck has 120k on it.

thanks Tiny

New fuel filter, it makes a huge difference

I have told him that. He said he has done it, about 2 months ago. I told him to do it again. That is cheaper than the 1600.00 he was quoted for a turbo.

Look for the hole in the intercooler tubes at the power steering lines?

You beat me to it :D.

Couldn't hurt to check all of the intercooler tubes too.

I will probably have to look at it myself. If it was a hole in the tube wouldn't you be able to hear it? Guy he talked too at garret told him he should have boost pressure of 6 to 15 lbs at 1000 rpm - no load? Sounds wrong to me I know I don't have any boost at that rpm w/ no load.

That must be why they gave him such good advice. Guess they just wanted a sale.

Furthermore: an LB7 with a bad turbo won't smoke as bad as most as there is a function in the computer that limits fueling based on airflow read from the MAF sensor. A bad turbo won't flow much air, hence the computer will not allow the fuel. However, there are Diagnostic tests that it performs looking for expected manifold pressures periodically, and if the pressures are outside those contained in the expected pressures table it will trigger a DTC. If he has a boost guage, he should be seeing about 4 to 7 PSIG cruising 60 to 70 MPH unloaded on the highway, with a peak of 17 to 22 PSIG at full load.

I have yet to see a failed LB7 turbo(made by IHI). I would suggest that you drive it yourself and see how it runs. If it was lack of rail pressure it should code(p0093 etc.) Does it set a ses lite or code at all? Is it modified an anyway? Possible plugged exhaust? Would need more info to be much help.

The truck has thrown no codes, and no cel. The truck is stock except for no muffler and no cat. Its lifted and 35" tires. But I'm pretty sure I need to go and check it out myself. I am hoping it just needs the fuel filter changed.

I would try cleaning the MAF when they are dirty your performance will be way off. Hope this helps.

The hole in the intercooler lines has shown not to throw codes, and most times is not heard. It was found on accident, and most of us LB7 owners have had to do a one time inspection for the hole, and it was there on some without the owner knowing.

MAF sensor cleaning is another good one as well, no codes from it most times as well.

i have an 02 lb7 and it didint have as much power as i thought it should and i changed fuel filter, oil filter, cleaned the intake, and changed the oil and the change was quite a bit. it had a whole lot more power.

This last weekend I had the same problem. Low power, seemed like tranny wouldn't shift down in lower gear and really slow taking off and not throwing any codes. I thought it was a fuel problem, but I found that the intake tube from the filter to the intake of the engine had popped out of the rubber boot, thus not pulling air properly accross the MAF sensor and totally defueling. I snapped it back in the rubber boot and tightened the clamp and all is good again.
