: Regen question
Tallyho74 07-23-2008, 11:32 AM I know this has been hashed over before, I've read the post complaining of fuel mileage and regens and such, I just want to throw this out there. 2008 LMM with just over 6000 miles. Not alot of towing, however some. I have run nothing but ULSD since day one. Over the winter I used the stanydyne additive to protect against gelling. I still add some to about every third tank for the additives since I have some left over from the winter. Mileage has been consistent at about 14.5 city and depending on the speed, 17-20 on the highway. The engine would go into regen mode about every other or every third tank of fuel. All of the sudden, it's gone into regen 4 times over the last two tanks of fuel (1/4 tank left right now). Fuel came from two different locations and I didn't add anything to it. When it was in regen the last time, It actually stunk up the cab at a stop sign and that hadn't happened since the truck was brand new. Now I know that's what it's supposed to do, however for the truck it seems very odd. I call the dealer and express my concern and they state it's updated with no new program flashes pending and since the check engine light isn't on, there is nothing they can do. I am not sure that I will tolerate the regen stench much longer, not just because it's the smell of money wasting, but it truly almost makes you sick. I know, suck it up, it's not that bad, but it really is. After riding trucks for the FD, I know funky diesel smells and this is one of them.
Just looking for a little bit of adivce on this or if anybody has had similar experiences with the engine doing this. Thanks in advance!!!
Ryan
D/AChris 07-23-2008, 11:59 AM This was one of the reasons I took the exhaust off. Couldn't stand the smell in the cab. Since changing, no more smells. I'd get a headache going to work in the mornings if a regen occurred. Not a good way to start the day. What finally did the DPF in was a few friends of mine were driving around and a regen started. They all smelled it and thought something was wrong with my truck, after explaining what the smell is, they still didn't think it was right. Brother in law was one of the passengers and his 6.7 MC Dodge does not smell at all in the cab when goes into a regen, so he says. That did it for me. Not having a $50K+ truck that makes me sick when goes into a regen. After a 3-4mpg increase since day one of taking the DPF off, best thing ever done to a vehicle, voided warranty or not. Chris

X2. I don't think i will ever miss the regens.
step child 07-23-2008, 01:58 PM Not trying to get off topic, but what would you voidon the warranty. I know you need to get the programmer to change the settings so you woun't get " check engine light ". I'm done with the DPF but I need the warranty.
Thanks J.
grandpa67 07-23-2008, 07:16 PM Living in a rural area I'm seldom in stop & go traffic so I've never smelled what you are describing, not yet anyway. One of the luckey ones I guess.
Sounds like for some reason, your truck has started to regen twice as frequently as it did prior. Got to wonder what that's all about? What did the dealer say about the increased frequency of the regen? Did you change anything on the truck that could have caused this or have you developed an exhaust leak somewhere under the cab? You would think you could hear it and smell exhaust all the time if that was the case but maybe not. Is it possible that expansion caused by increased regen temptures is creating a leak somewhere? Just guessing.
Having to put up with that kind of problem with a new truck that cost as much as these things do sucks to say the least. Hope someone comes up with a solution for you.
Tallyho74 07-23-2008, 07:57 PM I havn't done anything to the engine, not even changing the air cleaner. The only other thing that I thought about was maybe the fuel filter needs replaced. It says it has 60 percent life left, however it' the original filter with 7000 miles on it. I have tossed around the idea of the programmer with the dpf(the new banks ads almost suck you in) or going all the way with the turbo back, intake and ppe programmer. The part that pisses me off(sorry if I can't say that) is the wouldn't hesitate to screw you if something you did caused the problem, however this DPF thing is starting to be a horrible option that has all kinds of issues and it's no concern to the dealer/GM. With the cost of everything, I truly am hesitating messing with the programmer on this one. If it was an earlier model, I wouldn't think twice about it.
Diesel56 07-23-2008, 08:36 PM My o8 2500 HD 4X4 Silverado has the same problems. The truck has 3,000. I was getting 14 mpg for a while (one tank or so) then it went down to 11.5 mpg. I took it back to the dealer (Selman) and told them of this problem. They claimed they could not do anything. Now I put another 1,000 on it and I am STILL ONLY GETTING 11.5. I am not impressed with Selman or the trucks consumption at all:mad:.

Check out a post today titled "Total Recall" That might be the answer you are looking for. I don't know how to link to that post.
GaryK 07-25-2008, 01:38 PM What kind of oil are you running? Improper oil could cause DPF problems, excessive soot.......and according to some posts here you can't trust the dealer to put in the right oil either.
jpringle3 07-25-2008, 09:54 PM I have 18000k on mine, and I do live in the mountains, how do you know it is going into regeneration? To my knowledge, and I drive quite a bit with the fuel used per 100 k on and I have never seen a great increase in fuel used. I use rotella T CJ and did my second oil change at 16338. The monitor said it was about 50% both changes
mx2702001 07-25-2008, 10:24 PM 1st few times truck went threw regen i could smell it and notice the elevated idle now i hardly notice a regen but i been running it plenty hard which also helps to burn soot off also changed fuel station still B11 but just seems to make regen go lot easier and faster went back to old fuel station and tried their new Bio Mass fuel so see what it does now
JIMMMY 07-25-2008, 11:06 PM .......how do you know it is going into regeneration? .......I have never seen a great increase in fuel used. ...
If I happen to look at my DIC and it reads way less than normal, is about the only way to tell regen on my rig. It's very seamles with 11K+ miles never smelled hardly a thing, sometimes the exhaust seems hot but no stink even standing outside the rig.
Have not changed fuel filter....
;)

I have the same question....how do you know when it's going thru re-gen. I'm not sure what you mean when you said your "DIC reads way less than normal" I have the Banks 6-Gun with PDA, that has a screen option which will tell you the number of re-gens. I've had issues with my Banks tuner, but since monitoring the re-gen on the PDA, I have yet to re-gen?? How often should it happen? I have 8500 on the truck and have changed the fuel filter and show 57% left on it.
goodwrenchtech 07-29-2008, 01:27 PM Should happen every 300 to 600 miles. Depends on a lot of things ie. fuel used, run time, miles traveled......

I really hope that I will be getting the same milage increase as you! DPF comes off Friday and I can't hardly wait!
ML Racer 07-31-2008, 01:10 AM So,what I'm getting is the way you tell you're in a re-gen cycle is......something smells foul. What if it's just a buddy passing gas?:o:
Peter34668 07-31-2008, 09:42 AM Is there a kit for DPF removal that keeps it from throwing a code? The way I understood it was the programmer keeps on resetting the code but does not prevent a code from occurring. This would stop the remote start from working, or does it?
Also based on what others say here not everyone receives a mileage benefit from deleting the DPF, some have even seen a loss. Also for many there have been other problems such as going into limp mode.
With the cost of the programmer and new exhaust I'm on the fence. I also worry about emissions testing, a dealer having a bad day, a random highway inspection and loss of warranty.
I like the lack of smoke too but that one really doesn't effect my decision.
towedabode 07-31-2008, 06:35 PM So how do you loose the DPF the best way ? I have a DPF MBRP exhaust and dont want the truck to be louder, as I tow a 5th wheel a lot of miles a year. Can the DPF be replaced with a muffler (since the MBRP eliminates the OEM muffler) How does one modify the ECU so that it does not look for parameters to initiate regen and/or try to inject my precious diesel fuel into nowhere ? I would love to get rid of it....HELP !
ML Racer 08-01-2008, 05:58 PM Anybody have the Banks 6-Gun with PDA that has set one of the monitoring screens for the DPF Regen? It's been "0" for many miles until just noticing that it now shows "100" What does 100 mean? Did it just go thru a 100% regen cycle? As soon I find my Banks 6-Gun PDA info, I will look it up, but until then...anybody??

It just completed a regen cycle. :D
rcpd34 08-25-2008, 09:14 PM Are you guys aware of the TSB on the exhaust leak? Supposedly stinks up the cab on regen. Sounds like that's your problem. My truck doesn't smell at all during regen.
