: tie rod goona break?
jpolak07 07-23-2008, 12:24 AM Ok, im pulling on Thursday at the local fair. My driver side tie rod was bent and I straightened it a month or so ago. Who thinks it will snap during the pull?
I am going to bring a spare with just incase it does.
gandgracing 07-23-2008, 12:36 AM I take it you dont have sleeves? If it were me I would put on the good one and use the bent one for a spare.
Mike_S 07-23-2008, 12:37 AM yes. the bent tie-rod is weakened, and it will break. and odds are that the new one will do so at the pull as well. Why make a big gamble when you know you're not holding all the cards?
jpolak07 07-23-2008, 12:51 AM so u would put on the new rod before the pull...is it a 100% gaurantee that a rod will break in the pull? Its just one pull...never pull with this truck before but have with pulled before.
Mike_S 07-23-2008, 12:56 AM To tell you the truth, I would have thrown the bent one away. I won't trust a piece of steel after its been compromised. Not only did the initial bend weaken it, but bending it back straight did so even more. You may get lucky at the pull, but at the very least I would put the new one on.
catman05 07-23-2008, 01:05 AM Im Gonna Sleeve Mine Before I Pull
04BlackSmoker 07-23-2008, 05:54 PM Dont foget to lower the frontend, or you will be more in likely replacing more then just the tie rod if it breaks... I think it will break, save the money on replacing them and get sleeve's...I went to the first pull this year, I have tie rod sleeve's, didnt lower the frontend... I broke idler arm, broke cv shaft, and bent the piss out of the centerlink... Hard lesson learned.... lower the front
66flh 07-23-2008, 05:56 PM If you dont replace that tie rod,you better take a spare front axle too!If it bust under power, kiss that CV goodbye!
bogger 07-23-2008, 06:59 PM why bend something back like that. show your truck some love and give it a new tie rod some sleeves and lower the damn t bars before you break stuff
redneckbuckeye 07-23-2008, 07:04 PM why bend something back like that. show your truck some love and give it a new tie rod some sleeves and lower the damn t bars before you break stuff
What he said
jpolak07 07-23-2008, 07:06 PM it had the slightest bend ever in it...some people probally wouldnt have even noticed it.
I would sleeve it, but theres no way for me to get sleeves here by tomorrow afternoon.
bogger 07-23-2008, 08:35 PM well atleast put in the new rod and drop your bars, hope for the best and order some sleeves as we speak
20DirtyMax03 07-23-2008, 10:44 PM So your pulling at the Scott County Fair in Jordan tomorrow?? If you are you'll see me their.
jpolak07 07-23-2008, 11:12 PM yes that's where I will be! forecast is calling for rain...lets hope not! were you at the dyno day off of 212 about a month ago?
So your pulling at the Scott County Fair in Jordan tomorrow?? If you are you'll see me their.
20DirtyMax03 07-24-2008, 07:59 AM no i was in wis. that weekend. I wouldn't worry about your tie rod that track is pretty soft.
jpolak07 07-24-2008, 03:21 PM yeah thats what i was thinking also from when I pulled there 2 years ago...soft brown dirt.
Durallymax 07-24-2008, 04:33 PM Im kinda with everybody else. If it was bent. New MOOG ones are $36. At least at my auto parts store.
I would put money that it wont break. I pulled 3 times last year and never dropped the bars. Never broke a tie rod. I have yet to this day to break one. I had to replace mine this spring simply because they were wore out.
CV shafts like to break. Dont let it scare you, reman ones are around $100 and take all of 30 minutes to install.
I would definately lower the front and strap the centerlink if you can. Good luck.
Heres one of my pulls last year. How my tie rods lasted I have no idea.

20DirtyMax03 07-24-2008, 11:58 PM :wtf1: Why didn't you pull???
jpolak07 07-25-2008, 12:22 AM the big guy with the suspenders on was being an a hole! I asked 2 officials there if my hitch was big enough and was told yes...so I get to the track and mr. big guy was like that won't work. so I said ok that's fine, but the guy on the front of the sled said no it will work...then him and mr. big guy started bickering back and forth and then finally mr. big guy said I was DQ'ed for safety reasons so I was like whatever!
so all in all tonight really sucked!
funny part is that it was the same hitch I used 2 years ago there with the same 3inch rule.
I did video tape ur run and ill post it up on here if you would like.
ill definetly have a different hitch for carver countys fair! you goona be there?
20DirtyMax03 07-25-2008, 01:26 PM Yeah if you have a vid post it that would be sweet! I had an extra receiver and clevis you could have used. I don't think Carvers fair has one they haven't had diesels pickups since 06' stupid ntpa rules. If they have our class yeah for sure.
jpolak07 07-25-2008, 04:14 PM Dang! Shoulda came and talked to ya!
Why doesnt Carver County have Diesel Pick UP class?
Ill get the video up soon...camera is still in truck from yesterday.
20DirtyMax03 07-25-2008, 04:22 PM The N.T.P.A stopped letting stock trucks pull in their events because they were not equipped with any safety equipment. Now in all reality it would be fine if stock was stock but now you have guys running any where from 450 to 6 say 700wrhp with no safety equipment. I don't like it but I think ntpa did the right thing just covering their ass. And with the vid sooner the better i would like to see it thanks.
jpolak07 07-25-2008, 04:30 PM So I take it that Scott county doesnt go by NTPA rules then? I'm heading out to the truck in a sec to grab the camera.
jpolak07 07-25-2008, 04:38 PM Just got an e-mail back from someone at the carver county fair and they say no pick up pulls this year, just semis. GRRR
jpolak07 07-25-2008, 05:04 PM how do i add a video from you tube?
jpolak07 07-25-2008, 06:47 PM I figured out how to do it so here it is!!
