: My First Diesel 02 Duramax
NOScamaro 07-22-2008, 04:58 PM OK I finally got my first diesel truck to haul with. So far I wouldnt trade it for anything. However I am looking for anything you experienced guys can tell me/teach me. I have read alot of stuff on here and sometimes goet lost in all the opinions. I am going to return the K&N I bought to start.
I gues some topic conversation starters are:
1. What is the best thing to do for milage and towing; either together or seperate
2. Things to watch for/known issues
3. Info on codes I pulled out of it; I read what they mean, but what do they really mean?
P0621 Genrator L-terminal circuit
P0650 PCM Malfunciotn Indicator Lamp Control Circuit
P0700 ECM TCM Transmission Control Module (TCM) Requested MIL Illumination
P1626 PCm Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable Signal Lost
P1643 Wait to start lamp control circuit
U1000 Audio Amplifier, BCM, DDM, DRR, DSM, EBCM, ECM/PCM, GBCM, HVAC Control Module, IPC, PDM, Radio, RWSC Class 2 Data Link Malfunction
U1800 Lost Communications With Fuel Injector Control Module (FICM)
U2106 TCM loss of communication
Thanks in advance fellas. Little info...no I am not a young kid =. Im 36, I race, I wrench, and I cuss...ha ha ha.
Horsehaulin 07-22-2008, 06:49 PM That P0700 could be a limped transmission, get the TCM codes pulled before you go any further with mods!
Other than that, looks like you got a good truck. enjoy it, lord and GF know I do!

1LTREATR 07-22-2008, 07:18 PM injectors.....transfer case leaks.....head gaskets....water pumps.....all pretty common problems with early dmax's. The warrenty on the injectors got extended to 7 years or 200k whichever comes first because of so many problems. They are not cheap, nor is the labor if you dont do them yourself, and it is very time consuming job. Signs.... white, blue, grey smoke at idle or while driving, hard start, fuel in oil, lack of power, strong smell of fuel in the exhaust and im sure I left some out. Some dealerships are stubborn when it comes to the warrenty work, so IF you ever experience the problem you might have to go to a couple different dealerships to get the job done (if you still have a warrenty). Transfer case, I had the leak.....The only signs I can think of is a puddle of fluid on your driveway or a stream running down the tailgate and the whole underside of the truck is covered. The case is made out of magnesium which is very soft and there is an oil pump on the inside which has "teeth" if you will, on it. Theres a little bit of play in the pump and over time the teeth just rub a hole in the case I guess? There is a permanent fix for the problem which I purchased from a vendor on this site named Eric at Merchant automotive. If I could start over, that would be the FIRST thing I purchased for my truck. Check the drivetrain section theres plenty of reading and pictures on the subject. There is however NO fix for the injector problem. The dealerships just put in remans. Ive replaced a set with my brother and like I said its very time consuming. It was our first time inside of a duramax and everything went smooth. Ive never had the water pump problem or head gasket (knock on wood) so Hopfully someone who has will chime in. for mileage Id say keep the RPM's under 2k, fill your tires up to max psi and maybe get a chip/tuner for economy. Others will post their opinions.
NOScamaro 07-23-2008, 08:58 AM Thanks so far for the thought guys. I did clear the codes and drove it around, then checked again and there are no codes. I do have the stage III Hypertech in it.
As one of you suggested, and I read on here before, I am trying to keep it under 2000 in normal driving (not towing) to see what happens. DAMN is that hard to do?!?!? This thing just begs you to tickle the throttle harder.
I have towed with it twice and seemed to get 12-13mpg. I thought I might do better, but I dont think I had enough tongue weight on the truck neither. Pulling ~10K lb 28' enclosed car hauler with extra 6" height and no topper. The topper will be in Friday. Mainly for aerodynamic reasons, but they sure are handy too!
LT4V8Fiero 07-23-2008, 09:23 AM Also look at your boost tube running from the turbo to the inter cooler they can sometimes rub on the hard lines for the power steering and make a hole in your boost tube, killing power and mileage. I caught mine before it rubbed through because of this site! Also it's very hard to locate from up top much much easier to go through the driver side wheel well after removing the fender liner. Even still you have to "feel" for it as it's hard to see.
Horsehaulin 07-23-2008, 10:32 AM See on this site the members will try to help you save money and do the besr for your truck but never the wallet! Just look at my truck, these guys made me do it all! That's what I tell the GF atleast.

Thats any hobby right...ha ha ha. Shoudl have the gauges today...it looks pretty easy to T into the boost line under the "engine cover", but I am still nervous on where to place the pyro probe.
What is the dually club?
cumminstrokethi 07-24-2008, 04:31 PM Guages are definately a good thing to have! Another investment I would make if i were you, would be a larger exhaust.
cumminstrokethi 07-24-2008, 04:32 PM Oh, and the dually club is just a club for all members here who own duallies (sp?)

Go to the DIY section, it gives a great write up on how to drill and install it.
Also straight pipe the stock exhaust, it will sound great, and cost a fraction of a new system.
1st time Deisel owner & Ignorance is not bliss....
2002 2500 crewcab, 82K miles, LT, Auto Allison, Edge (juice/attitude) and K&N filter. Rest stock. Bought it last winter.
Started seeing a little more smoke lately on basic acceleration and when pulling the boat up the canyon I put my foot into it at 60MPH to go around an idiot doing 45 in the 65 and the truck blew the biggest puff of black smoke I've seen (by FAR !!) No performance issues that I can hear or feel, should I be thinking injectors? I had no idea of the warranty mentioned here on the site but am slightly releaved 'cause I might have a few months left. Should I head for the dealer now and have it looked at?
Why not the K&N from the original NOScamaro post?
Transfer case oil leak is appering too. I'll read more blogs to figure it out I guess.
Finally, when the truck sits in the sun there is a strong deisel smell. Ever heard of that?
Thanx all, glad I happened upon this site but now I'm worried too
shortcircut65 07-24-2008, 10:55 PM return the K&N because of over-oiling issues. they can come over oiled from the factory, ans mess up the mass air flow sensor. and when you clean them yourself and re-oil them, they can become over oiled that way. a regular paper air filter like from napa or something will do the job just as well, only difference is that you cant re-use them.
Ken
cumminstrokethi 07-24-2008, 11:30 PM TR67, how long have you had that air filter in there without cleaning it?
NOScamaro 07-25-2008, 10:07 AM Oh, and the dually club is just a club for all members here who own duallies (sp?)
Count me in on the dually club!!!! How do I get my number...lol
As far as returning the K&N.....lack of filtration. I read more posts on here about them and I can go either way on the MAF sensor, depending on oiling and drying time, but most all agreed with the too much dirt passage.
Ill look at the DIY section. I am very confused on where to put the probe. No one has really covered the beneifit of before or after the turbo. The instruction say 1-2" after the turbo. Anyone got any pics of there theres is on the LB7s?
I got the boost gauge plumbed, going to paint the pillar tonight and run the light wires. That leads me to another quick question. Where do you guys tap into the light system? I can probe around as usual by why try to reinvent the wheel. Ill ask the pros......
JustinD 07-25-2008, 10:19 AM just drill the passenger side exhaust manifold.
Tolliwacker 07-25-2008, 10:58 AM Drill the passenger side exhaust manifold for the EGT Probe, Look up the hoot meathod for the install, you will find a hoot meathod for trans fluid as well.
The lights, hook them to the fues box on the left side of the dash.
The K&N was put in a week after I bought it in December '07 and I clean it regularly. Been using them in vehicles for 15 years without a glitch. However I'm not much of a wrench and do't know the intricacies of the Mass Air Scensor. Anyway it's only got a couple thousand miles on it since last cleaning.
So, Black smoke is 1st indicator of Injector problems?
The opinion is strong on the K7N so I'll lose it. So my question now is my smoking problem potentially linked to the MAF sennsor becasue something got though the K&N and changed the flow options at the computer? Am I tracking right at all?
JustinD 07-25-2008, 01:02 PM Black smoke is ok. White smoke is a problem.
What fuel filters do you guys like? I hear anything that is 2 micrograms filtration is best but which ones are they?
Thanx for the replies on the smoke too. My concern is lessoned for sure.
turbohaulic 07-25-2008, 09:13 PM My last 02' dmax had a power problem, smoked alot (it puffed a big cloud when I would go to pass people as well). But always started right up, and idled great. I took it to the dealer and right away they said the injecters where bad. So I got that done but to my dissapointment that didn't solve the problem. I never did find out what the real problem was.:(
NOScamaro 07-28-2008, 12:54 PM I had a weird one on this truck over the weekend. Got a new topper put on and I put in my pillar pod set. One more small detail I turn the light off while runnign useing the "push the dome overidee 4 times" method saturday night......however the daytime runnign lights would not work sunday no matter what I did. Now this morning they are back on. Any idea what happened there?
