: Fuel Gauge Problem
WYO_DMAX 02-28-2005, 09:29 AM Has this happened to anyone else? I know of 3 trucks in my little town that has had it happen. I filled my tank the other day, took off from the gas station and the fuel gauge clicked and went to full empty, then the idiot light kicked on. When it got down to about 3/4 tank, it worked fine until empty. The next fill it did it again.  Any thoughts?
GMC-2002-Dmax 02-28-2005, 09:44 AM Did you fill with it running ?????????
blnagel 02-28-2005, 09:55 AM ME 2!!! I always shut my truck off when I fill up. What is the deal? I does not happen all the time either.
HELP.

Autoed 02-28-2005, 10:30 AM I have recently been seeing more fuel sender problems where the sensor reads higher than it should (98% I think is the max allowable). When it does this, the PCM sets a code, and the gauge goes to empty for the remainder of the ignition cycle. This only seems to occur after fill-up. I have seen it on Gas burners only, but I'll bet the diesel sensors are the same style... Let me know what the resolution is.

WYO_DMAX 03-01-2005, 08:59 AM Sometimes I leave it running, sometimes not when I fuel up. This doesn't stay that way for the ignition cycle, I assume you mean until the engine is shut off. It will click and read for a while, then I may hit a bump or turn a corner and it will click and go to empty.
GMC-2002-Dmax 03-01-2005, 09:24 AM Sounds like a loos connection..........
It is intermittant or possible a ground for the sending unit..........
blnagel 03-01-2005, 10:54 AM Mine will do it while driving down the road. Very intermitent though. Any ideas? It will "correct" itself withut shutting it off.

olskool53 03-01-2005, 11:09 AM Mine has done this 8 times now! Dealer says Gm knows of the problem and it is a software issue! They have no fix yet! My sender was replaced along with my transfer pump! Gm just relased a recall for a venting problem with cab & chassis trucks that was supposed to fix the guage problem, but it didn't! My truck has been reflashed 3 times and the code has been reset 8 times! And after the last flash my cd is no longer there, ya, you flip through from am,fm1,fm2,and back to am no cd? Its got to be a computer problem! If anyone gets this fixed or knows of a fix let me know! My dealer is stumped they even called in a GM engineer and same answer software problem no fix yet! Its a big pain in the Ass,thank god for the dic thats the only way i know how much fuel i have.
I have had my fuel tank sensor replaced four times as it does not accurately read. The first three would allow you to run out of fuel. The fourth one actually goes to empty when you still have 6 gallons of fuel left. There is a TSB on the sensors but they have not found the right solution with the sending units yet but I will not run out of fuel. Amen to the DIC. The sensors get fouled with High sulfur content diesel fuel. I have not had mine go crazy as you have advised...Jim
2003 2500 HD D/A CC/SB LT, Juiced, Isspro Gauges everything else stock
If you can really call these trucks stock..
TLTBOWEN 03-01-2005, 08:17 PM On my work truck I will be getting my 3rd sending unit when I get a chance to take the truck in. Crusing down the road with a 1/2 tank looked down a few miles later and it was on E with the light on. I went to fill up and only got 20 gallons in. This is the dual tank normally holds 40. Truck only has 3,800 miles on it. If this is the only problem the truck gives I will be happy.
LaBeym 03-01-2005, 10:47 PM My theory? It's a factor as to how fast a fillup and thus how much foam at top of tank when auto shutoff triggers. The fuel sender is a resistor mounted on the in tankfuel pump and a float mounted on a hinged arm rides up/down against resister. Resistance is read by fuel guage and translates to how full/empty tank is. Slow fill or fill at a station with anti-foam added to fuel results in float riding higher in tank and thus off scale. Fast fill and/or no anti faom results in earlier shutoff of auto shutoff at station pump. Float rides lower in tank and you get a mostly normal reading. The float arm has no stop except when it gets pinned to top of tank by fuel level. My theory and I'm sticking to it!!
btfarm 03-02-2005, 08:21 AM First refuel on my '05 yesterday. I'm a newbie. Went from big block to Dmax. Filled it running... didn't know that was a no no. Took 10 miles of driving to get it to register full, then seemed to drop down awful fast. Don't have DIC on the LS, so I guess I'll have to get a feel for it.:o:
WYO_DMAX 03-02-2005, 08:54 AM I don't think it's a software issue, for me anyway. Like I said, it starts reading just fine from around 3/4 tank on down. That doesn't sound like software to me.
LaBeym, that sounds good, but I have an '01 and it just started this. Also, I've filled at several stations and had the same problem.

First, welcome to the forum!
There is a buffer built into the instrument cluster, which prevents the gauge from moving rapidly on turns, stops, accel, etc. This is what makes it move V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y when filled with the ignition switch ON. Don't worry about that, it's normal. I usually recrank my truck after fueling begins, so the family doesn't complain about the lack of heat/AC/radio (whiners!) Since diesel doesn't have the explosive fumes like gasoline, I don't worry about it.
Aside from that, LOTS of fuel senders going bad, with various symptoms. As long as GM keeps building them that way, I have a job!!

blnagel 03-03-2005, 10:21 AM I too have filled up at many locations and it is hit and miss will this will happen. I usually fill ALL the way up the nozzle, meaning I get diesel to the top. Is this the problem?
