: Supertank update
flivver 02-28-2005, 09:05 AM For those considering this upgrade and wondering about the fuel gauge reading, I let mine run down to one hash mark above E this weekend before stopping to fill up. This is on a 50 gallon shortbed tank. The DIC reported 40.1 gallons used and I put 41 gallons filling to the top of the filler neck. So if you install one of these, the gauge is OK as a general reading but it appears that the DIC will keep you updated more accurately. BTW, I drove 4 weeks on this last tank. Unfortunatley, the price of diesel rose 15 cents a gallon in that time ($2.34 gallon)
:cussing:

Very happy. I consider it a good value in terms of convenience (i.e. 600+ miles per tank).
lbz492 02-28-2005, 10:33 AM the one thing that i don't like it the price. i have been thinking about doing it for a while but the price is what is holding me back. but i guess you have to look at the conventence

Sure it's a pile of money. But I don't consider it overpriced. It's a quality product, went in relatively easy, and so far it's troublefree. And considering the cost of design and production, I'm surprised it's not more expensive.

flivver,
Who did they install? Did you do it yourself or have someone do it? If you had someone install it who was it and what did they charge if you do mind my asking.
Thanks
Brad

Brad,
Installed it myself (well, my Dad helped me). First time I ever swapped a fuel tank. Was going to have it done but couldn't find anyone to do it. Figure about 7 hours.
what were the hardest parts, most time consuming ? 7 hours ?
how about fuel neck options to accept the large truck nozzles, available ?
did you move the fuel cooler ?

The 7 hours are total for removing the old tank, moving the sending unit to the new, placing the new tank and hooking it up. Also, I pinched a line and had to drop the tank to reroute. And I already had a Nictane that I had to route for.
Hardest part was lifting it past the unused tray under the bed. This is the tray talked about at here (http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20493&highlight=supertank). Had to pry the tank past it. The directions tell you to remove it but it's welded in.
The only other tough part is removing/reattaching the fill neck since you have to get a screwdriver onto the hose clamp and it's a long reach. The rest of it went together easy due to the great design. Did NOT have to move/remove the cooler. The tank uses the existing lines and sender. It already comes with the large filler neck (I think the older models that were discounted did not).
lbz492 03-01-2005, 03:25 PM so you are saying you didin't have to do anything to the fuel cooler.
fuel007one 03-01-2005, 03:45 PM I have taken mine down to 41 gallons used. I would like to find out if I can go lower since there are supposed to be 9 more gallons down there....same DIC vs Pump figures that flivver cites. Very close.
flivver 03-01-2005, 05:14 PM so you are saying you didin't have to do anything to the fuel cooler.No. I think the original design had you remove it and replace it with a finned return line. They redesigned it to use the existing cooler and that's the tank I installed. The cost of the redesign was about 5 gallons capacity given up. Still, it's 50 gallons for the short bed model.

I would like to find out if I can go lower since there are supposed to be 9 more gallons down there....same DIC vs Pump figures that flivver cites. Very close.I have wanted to carry a 5 gallon can around and run the tank dry just to see where that happens. Also see what happens on upgrade/downgrades. But the thought of getting out of traffic and repriming makes me use the 1/4 tank level as a 'time to fill up' warning.
If I remember, the pickup unit was some sort of cup design that I believe holds maybe a pint to a quart in reserve. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.
butzkeg 03-02-2005, 03:12 PM I got 43 gallons in mine once, filled up about 15 miles after low fuel light came on. Now, this is supposed to be a 53 gallon tank, right? I would think you could use up 45-48 without any trouble. The largest part of that tank is by far the bottom 3" which runs the full length of the tank.
I am very happy to only fill once a week though, around 700 miles rather than twice a week. If I could only remember what setting on my Predator got me 19.5mpg I should be able to go 850 miles on a tankfull even with the light on. I just can't keep track of that when filling 4 times a month.
Do any of you with the supertank notice any "diesel seepage" (technical term) on your tanks?
I was under my truck the other night and noticed oily patches on the underside of my supertank. After the finger wipe and sniff test I determined it was diesel. I think I tracked it down to an allen head bolt on the back of my tank near the top. The bolt turns pretty easy - I am not sure if this needs to be tighter or is acting as some sort of vent. I didn't install the tank myself so I am not sure how it all runs under there.
In the past I have filled the tank to the gills and think maybe I somehow overfilled it. At this point, I have wiped up the seepage as best I could and keeping am keepng an eye on it. Also, I don't fill so full - once the pump clicks off its pretty much done.
I never did smell diesel. I was just under there looking at the exhaust and noticed it. I should take it back to the installer, but have since lost some faith in their abilities.
Thanks for any input.

Install back and don't expect it to bottom out. Just turn it in till it's flush. My truck has been sitting full for 4 days on a slight uphill slope and no leak.
Flivver,
Thanks for the help. I will give a try.
Man, I love this forum! :)
