Well?

I will not be drilling any extra holes. Whats the best brand, and cheapest price?

Not necessarily looking to keep the windshield clear of bugs (I hear it takes a big wing to do that) Im just looking to keep the rock chips and such off the hood......

Anyone having wind noise with the Lund, I heard they are noisey at 70mph? How about the GM one?

Banshee, I have no wind noise that I can hear with mine. It does not rattle or anything, not sure what is causing yours to be that way. Might want to see about new screws and new fasteners.

I have a Lund Trident and have had no problems with noise or movement from it. Took 5 minutes to install with the no-drill hardware. I've been real happy with it. I think it's a little thicker than some, too. Matches the contour of my hood perfectly. Picked it up through Summit.

Does the GM or Lund touch the visible area of the hood in any way?

Looking at the Lunds, they mentioned double sided tape...........

Does the GM or Lund touch the visible area of the hood in any way?

Looking at the Lunds, they mentioned double sided tape...........

what do you mean touch the visible area of the hood. the GM one uses existing holes all ready in the hood and there is no tape.

BansheeBruce
02-28-2005, 04:43 PM
I think he means the deflector "rests" or touches the outside of the hood. Some use little rubber bumpers or double sided tape as a cushion. This will eventually wear or scratch the paint on the hood. Make sense?

Triffid
02-28-2005, 04:54 PM
The GM one that I have does not touch the hood except on the underside where it is attached to the hood... No rubber bumpers or double sided tape..........Triffid

GM deflector I have for 2005 comes with screws and 3M body tape. It doesn't touch the outside surface of the hood although has caused a rub mark on the top of grill. This wear mark is only visable when hood is open. I have since adjusted the hood latch and bumpers. Good quality and fit. I notice a wind noise at higher speeds that seems to be comming from the top of the windshield since this installation. Is sounds like a flag flapping, maybe it is a checkered flag.

I had the Lund on my '03 and personally didn't care for it. Now I've got a Chevy one, and I like it a lot better because it's made of a thicker lexan material and is more rigid. Unfortunately, neither one keeps all the bugs off the windshield. I have one more for rock chip protection more than anything.

I have a Lund. I believe it is the interceptor. It mounts using existing holes under the hood and does not touch the visible paint. I don't have any problems with it. Dad is looking into the 3M paint protection film for his 05.

I have a Driver Design, and am very pleased. I've used them on my last 3 trucks, and never a problem. Mounts with just the pre-drilled holes in the hood. Its also easy to wax and wash behind. Last time I looked at the GM product, it was hard to get between the hood and deflector for cleaning and waxing.

I have the EGR simulated carbon fiber one. I like it and it mounts to the underside of the hood with 4 screws.

I also have the EGR in a grey smoke, kinda matches the truck. A little noise at high speeds, but that will be resolved with my new windshield next week! Doesn't touch the painted surface and not drilling for install.

took a llok at mine tonight again, in the center of the deflector, about a inch of paint rubbed off now, this thing gotta go, and yes it rattles after 70mph, or on a strong head wind and 60mph(who drives 60)

I have a Stampede bug deflector for my 2004.5 Silverado. I did a side-by-side comparison with the Lund and went with the Stampede because it was thicker---meaning to me that it would be more rigid. It is a total bolt on operation with no stand-offs and does not touch the hood paint at all. No wind noise, very stiff, still looks new after 17000 miles...

sprintmod1
03-07-2005, 09:29 AM
I also have the stampede, was put on by the customizer shop that the dealer uses before I ever saw the truck. Seems very strong, no wind noise, been there for 23,000 miles; I think it does make the TTT mirrors vibrate just a little bit though. Very happy with it.

I've been through a lot of them including Lund. GM is the way to go IMO. New holes to drill, no wind noise, no windshield vibration, no mirror vibration.

Hey, I bought a LUND stainless Steel model for my 2005 GMC truck, it just screws in. I see no deflection from the ends ( so I know it won't contact the truck), when traveling on the highway. So far, I I love it.

04-28-2005, 01:24 PM
Any pics of that stainless one (or any other one) on a 2005 Chevy? I wonder if it will detract from the new front end look.

On my 2003, I had a Lund interceptor that broke apart on my way to sell the truck. I pulled off at a rest stop, ripped it off, and tossed it in the garbage. Never again with a Lund.

Sorry, no pictures yet. I did want to mention one other thing. I had the 3M clear bra put on the entire front end of my 2005 GMC, (hood and lower bumper area) in addition to the stainless steel bug gaurd.

For those who had issues with the regular bug gaurds, this may be an alternative. Though this stuff is expensive over $400 for the entire front end.

Has anybody else put the clear bra material on their truck??

Thanks

I am about to do the same, On the wifes Tahoe and the Dmax... I guess I'll find out...

On edit : they are both EGR's

You guys having rattling or wind noise. I had the same prob. When having a new windshield installed, I was talking to the guy & he said "no prob." Alot of chevys he worked on ,did that. Just put sealer on each side molding of windshield. Problem solved,no more noise since he did it. Hope this helps. I also had thought it was fault of deflector & changed twice.

any thoughts on the spray on option? i was thinking that it might not work 100% as well as a plastic bug guard, but it will keep those rocks from chipping the paint

Bought the Lund stainless interceptor, knew things weren't going to go to well when I pulled it out of the box and it practically folded in half.I have wrapped baked potatoes in thicker material than this thing was made from.Mounted it anyway, and couldn't get it to stop vibrating, adjusted it all over the place trying to make it work but no luck.On this s/steel unit there is a space in between the deflector an the hood,it's not molded around the front edge of the hood like the plastic units and in turn the air rushes between the hood and the deflector causing it to vibrate. This thing is very poorly designed, even if you could adjust to stop vibrating the material is so thin that one small bump and you would be back to square one.Returned it and bought the plastic/lexan interceptor and have had absolutly no problems with it.

remember, if you go with a bug deflector, you will have to tape down the windshield molding on each side. Now there is another option. You could go to one of the guys thatdo spray on truck bed liners and have one sprayed on your truck. Looks the same, no wind vibrations and will not chip or crack. you might even be able to get one to match the paint, i don't recommend paint matched spray in liners as the sun will eventually fade them.

Or you can go to the local parts store and get a can of the spray in bedliners and spray it on yourself. just make sure you tape the area off and cover everything else. also be sure to lightly sand everything and clean it off well. don't use any soaps when cleaning it off. use something like alcohol or something that will not leave a film nor any wax or grease.

just a few things to consider.

Hotruc

I think possibly better than the spray if you are after an invisible type protector, would be the clear stick on 3M paint protection, http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/_s.155/86661/_l/en_US/ film , GM has factory applied it to certain locations on some vehicles and I have used it before and it works great with the bonus being years later it can be heated and removed. It can also be use anywhere on the vehicle where you want some stone or abbrasion resistance, rocker panel, lower rear quarters behind wheels ect.If you put some heat to it while you are applying it (careful here)it is quite versatile for forming around different shapes and contours.

I bought the GM bug deflector on the advice of many on this board and proceeded to install it myself. An easy job for a newbie like myself.

I read the instructions and knew that I would have to lift the hood latch to accomodate the BD. Again an easy job needing minimal tools and experience. This gave me the opportunity to examine which way to push the hood latch so I could do it without bending and squinting in front of the gas jockey.

I balanced the hood so that I could add the screw inserts to the hood and dry fitted the BD. A OK, green light.

So I put two screws in my mouth and two in my pocket and placed the BD onto the balanced hood. Grabbed one screw from my mouth and inserted it. This going good, I thot. Next I'll take one from my pocket and still have one in my mouth if I need it quick.

I put the screwdriver on the radiator shroud and put my hand on top so it wouldn't roll into the engine compartment and turned my head to put my hand in my pants pocket when all of a sudden, the hood came down on my hand...and latched in the first notch.

I had just worked on the latch so I knew which way it went. I grabbed the latch handle and pushed it hard to the right. Nothing. Sure...I have to push the hood DOWN to disengage the hook in the latch. Censored

I try to tap out but she will just not let go. I look around for a neighbor, paper boy, one of the Dynamic Duo. NoGo. :help:

"Well", I thot, " I die here, at the hands of my brand new truck or I suck it up and pull like hell."

The swelling went down after a week. I like to think that I'm a carefull guy but I never even saw this one coming.

And one thing for sure... I will forever know EXACTLY where the latch handle is and which way to push it.

My Stainless steel bug deflector is not thin. It's actually thick. You'd really have to bend this to make an impact.

Wind noise from bug deflector going 70mph w/a Dmax? How can you tell?

Have Lund Stainless Interceptor on 04 Chevy and 02 GMC, looks great, cleans/shines good, only problem is that you can catch the corners and bend it if not careful. Have GM vent shields and they are very sharp so I have no doubt deflector is quality also, just not stainless.

Lund Poly Interceptor on 90 Chevy, always bought Lund with no problems encountered.

I have an AVS (made by Lund), came with 4 mounting screws and inserts for hood . When I first put it on I noticed it was a little floppy , tried it out and got a wind noise . When I got back to the shop to check it out I saw there was a fifth whole in the hood , dead center . Drilled a new whole and put in an insert and screw , no floppy , no noise . Don't know why it didn't come with the center whole , poor design or just a goof . Those with a problem you might want to check .

Ughhh! Bug/rock deflectors have always bugged me :o:. Cleaning them and having to be careful about breaking them when reaching up to pull the hood down. -:t

I really like the clean look of front end of these rigs and resorted to the clear film type from www.xpel.com (http://www.xpel.com)
Great protection for head/turn/fog lamps as well as hood/trim pieces. About $190.00 for full front end protection ($70 for lamp protection/$120 for hood/trim).

A rock cracked one of my head lamp housings, would've covered the cost of the whole kit. The application isn't to bad if you have patience, a comfortable stool, some shade and a hair/blow dryer. Comes with good instructions and a decent application too. Take your time, start with a small piece and if becomes kinda a zen thing with the front end of your truck.
Okay okay, it's okay to love our trucks . . .but not okay to LOVE our trucks ):h
Otherwise, there are installers available as well.
