Lots of possibilities, most likely is the injection pump's advance mechanism has failed and your advance device is no longer functioning properly. Before you change the pump, change fuel filter and check supply pressure first.

My '82 smokes out the right tailpipe. Think it's because of a bad seal on an exaust valve. Might have a burned inatke valve too. This is probably a different problem than yours.

Its all in the title of this thread, blue/whitish smoke and diesel smell. Theres raw fuel coming out of the tail pipe. If its severe, you probably need a pump, if its minor, you might just need to advance the pump a little, if you have rough idle as well, you may need injectors too, but its definitely a pump/injectors issue.

drivers side to advance, correct...
I think your going to find you need a pump AND a set of injectors AND maybe more (supply pump, timing chain, etc.) to get her running right.

I have to agree on a bad injection pump. Try the timing advance first. Locate a long lever (4") on passenger side of injector pump, with engine running at idle, depress this lever, (engine should stumble) watch advance piston on bottom of lever to see if it returns after being depressed. Other issues could be bad internal parts of injector pump. I doubt any problems with injectors.

Well i'll have to check that out if it's a bad pump i guess it'll have to wait till i get some capital to get a new pump:( I guess i'll just hope it's just a timing issue guess i'll find out when i check it

thank's again everyone

Prices on those old 6.2 pumps are getting pretty low, there's not that many of them still around.
