: Pitted injector lines.
Jarasic 07-19-2008, 03:50 AM After quite a fight with the dealer i got the news that my injectors would be replaced under warranty. When they pulled it apart they noticed that the return lines off the injectors were pitted. Does anyone know or has heard of this being a problem as well? The return lines are not covered and are $200 each X8 plus 4 hours diagnostic time. What would cause pitting? 6 out of 8 return line o-rings blew out and 5 or 6 injectors were leaking. The truck has 127K miles. In a matter of about an hour or so of driving it puked about a quart or so of fuel into the oil. I filled up 2 days before and checked the oil, drove home and parked the truck until Monday morning when I drove down town and noticed it started to idle rough. Once I noticed this I drove straight to the dealership and dropped it off for them to look at. The dealer told me it wasn't going to be covered under warranty until I called GM Canada, and had the service manager call me.
Also... What does "high pressure seal extrusion" mean in the GM injector Bulletin No.: 04039B?
Thanks for your time,
Jaris
NelsonDiesel 07-19-2008, 04:55 AM Have them show you the lines that are pitted....
if they are then replace them. They are not 200 a piece though and there is no need for 4 hours diag. it takes 2 seconds to look at them.
Most likely they are fine.
If they need to be replaced then there should not be any extra pay from you fo labor because they have to be removed anyway...
mikek996 07-19-2008, 07:45 AM the diag time is probly for the time to find out what was leaking. could have been a "new" injector. It takes time to run the engine with valve covers of with dye in the fuel to find the leak. not sure how bad they are pitted but I have had good luck with sand blasting the corroded part and reusing them. gm wont pay for these.

the sand blasting is a way that gm says they must be cleaned. GM will pay 1 hour of OLH to clean them. The diag time is a joke. You get paid for diag time under the special policy when you are testing the injectors. The lines don't just start leaking. They will hod together until removed then they will appear pitted. A good cleaning and they won't leak.
DURAtotheMAX 07-19-2008, 02:15 PM I have some lines for sale if you want them...
Jarasic 07-19-2008, 03:13 PM Hi again,
After a visit to the dealer i physically looked at the injector lines and realized they are pitted from the under hood elements. I guess now if i can find a good used set of these lines before Tuesday i can avoid the dealer price. They averaged out to be about $200 a piece.
Anyone know of any available?
Thanks Again.
Jaris

what do you mean diag time is a joke? 4 hours may be a little excessive, especially that they should have cleaned them when they were off. diag time in spec policy is to do a fuel return test, not to find and internal fuel leak. if its even the lines leaking, usually you can see the fuel coming out throught the top and then dripping down the valve cover. it could be an injector, have had them leak right out of the box.

i agree
shortcircut65 07-20-2008, 10:14 PM its deja-vu all over again for me. i got the same runa round on mine that just got done. they finally said it would be done under warrentee(after the service manager got caned) and they found one line to be leaking after they put it back together. replaced that one, then they found two lines to be pitted. they finally replaced the other 7 and it was all done on GM's dime. they also had one injector on the verge of being bad out of the box. i talked with the mechanic this weekend, and he said he has never seen this happen before, and called my truck a freak truck because of that and its history(very, very long)

bad injector out of the box is not too uncommon.... Just had one truck done at another dealer, 500 miles later i get the truck and ended up replacing 2 more of the new 8.... It happens.
My opinion - If the parts are pitted but weren't leaking until they were removed while doing a warrantable claim. the part gets replaced on their dime.... Unless of course it's pure neglect.... which this is not.

I agree its their special policy I charge everything possible to gm but they wont pay for the lines. they pay for those crappy little hex head bolts though.
shortcircut65 07-22-2008, 07:36 PM mike, let me get you line of thinking on this one. just got my injectors replaced, one line wouldnt seel, then two were pitted, the dealer replaced the remaining 7. they were fine before the tech started the "warrantee" work, but got messed up while doing said work. my thinking is that GM should pay for at least 3 of the lines, seeing as how it was because of the "warrantee" work, that they started leaking. am i wrong in thinking this? my service manager has the same thinking as me. what do you think?

i'm not mike but i agree with his above stement and i do the same.... I agree with your statement too. I haven't had a chargeback yet on such repairs. needs to be thoroughly explained in the techs story though.
shortcircut65 07-22-2008, 08:08 PM thanks. they didnt even try to charge GM for it, they just went ahead and did it under "goodwill" cause they jerked me around for over a year with this. i wanted more, but that about evened it out, so im not going to complain. too much.
