I am looking at hard-wiring my V1 up near the rear view mirror. I took the overhead console down but I am looking for a power source that is linked to the ignition. The map lights are always on so that won't work. I unplugged the harness in the back of the mirror but I am not sure which wire is hot (no red wire). Does anyone know a good source for ignition based power in that area???

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Derek

DerekJust run a wire across the headliner, down the a-pillar, and to the fuse buse on the left side of the dash. Very easy to do.
Look here to see how to remove everything.

http://www.bmdmax.com/Gauges.html.4.html Agreed! That's exactly what I did. Here's mine;

Just shove it under the headliner and down the A-pillar, then
connect it into the fuse pannel on the side of the dash....

Pretty easy IMHO.

good luck,

T.

I did mine by just grabbing constant 12V from the courtesy lamp in the overhead.Take the overhead out push a coat hanger or similar out toward windshield, tape on the wire pull it back, crop, tie in,reinstall overhead.

Worked slick and quick.

Yeah, but then don't you have to turn it off manually? With it being
ingnition switched, it'll turn on/off with the key....

Ditto, Mac, the computer will "shut-off" the detector after about 10-15 min.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. My worry is that the 10-15 minutes before the radar goes off will be the time the thief does a smash and grab!!! Nothing like an indicator light telling a thief "here I am"!

Has anyone tapped into the harness that plugs into the back of the mirror? This is linked to the ignition already and is in the location I need. There are a bunch of wires of different colors but no red. Closest thing is a pink solid wire.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this harness???

Thanks,

Derek

I would get a test light and start looking at fuse box.

I did mine the same way as others mentioned. Run wire under headliner and down A-pillar to fuse lock. Just take a test light and find an empty terminal that is a "keyed-hot" (hot when key is ON). I have the V1 mounted above the mirror and the wire running inside the mirror wire cover. Had it the same way in my 99 Z-71.

FYI, i wired mine up this weekend when i installed my clearance lights. i tapped into the leads for the map lights. see pics below. works perfectly!

I've been told NOT to position detector behind the factory sun shading as it cuts down on the sensitivity of the detector????? Don't know for sure though.:ro)

interesting, ive never heard that. i had it up there in my old truck (with 15% aftermarket tint in front of it) and never had a problem. i like it tucked up and out of the way instead of middle of the dash. it also makes it easy to put up a solar sun shield when parked.

I have my Escort 8500 mounted in the same location and I don't think I have a sensitivity problem. It sits just below the "dots"

Not wanting to steal this thread, but now that you've got power, how does everyone keep em up there?

Suction cups are ok but seems to me that they would fail after a while.

In my old truck I had it velcroed to the top of the mirror. Never had it come off and I made a lot of hard high boost 4wd launches.

those suction cups are stronger than you think! ive never had one fall off and ive had a radar detector for 7 yrs and 5 vehicles. when i took this one off to move it up top, the bracket came off the suction cup before the suction will give out from the windshield.

That's exactly how I have mine. The suction cups don't work well on top of the dots. The only thing bad about the velcro is you can't move the mirror once you have it where you want it.

Not to hijack this but what are people installling there now.... I think with this new chip I am gonna need a detector. I have no experience here... what is a good one and can I (should I) stay under 200 bucks?

I stopped using radar detectors that mount on the dash or with suction cups for several years.

I currently have a Whistler 3450 remote mount detector. I love it, works great and is good against not giving too many false positives.

There is a picture of it mounted on on my steering column in my sig.

That is a pretty sweet setup. Did you get the voice box? Was looking at getting one, but didn't want it hangin on the glass...

Thanks for the info

No, I didnt get the voice module. Figured I wouldnt be able to hear it with my system kicking. :ro) :ro)

This is actually my 3rd remote mount radar detector. I tried a regular dash mount one once, and found it annoying.

This Whistler one has auto-quiet and a nice display.

The price is great and it works soo well. I mounted the laser detector sensor under the rear view mirror. (i'll try to post a photo)

I also tapped into the map lights for 12V for the V1 and my garage door remote (which conveniently runs on 12V).

I noticed that I have to flick on-and-off the map lights to get it to startup. But then it stays on and goes off after the twilight period.

My V1 is several years old, and the suction cups still work fine. I have the cups above the tint line, with the detector just peeking out below. If the cups fall off, clean them and the glass with window cleaner.
