I am in the process of getting gauges Boost and EGT. A friend of mine put it in the pass side manifold, some one else told me to put it directly after turbo>>Where is the best place to install EGT Probe and to tie the Boost Gauge into????

i put mine on the passenger side, it was reall easy to access. for the boost gauge i got a small tee fitting and put it in the line between the wastegate and turbo (small rubber hose under cover)

Search "Hoot method". I put my EGT in the top rear of the passenger side exhaust manifold and the boost drilled and tapped in the intake on top of the motor.

moved to interior.

I'm not sure on the boost tap for your motor but the EGT probe is best in the flat area (rear) of the Pass manifold

The friend who helped me install mine put it in the downpipe? just above the front axle. Is this an acceptable place, and should I add or subtract from the readout inorder to set my defuel? Thanks for any help. P.S. I know it says to put the wax towable weight and record EGT's in stock form while going up a hill for comparison, but haven't had the chance.

Putting the probe in the manifold will give you a higher number, and has the possibility of giving you the most problems and restricts your exhaust. Put it in the down pipe just like all the class eights.

Man to omany opinoins...lol. I an going to put mine in th emanifold liek a guys directions in the DIY section. Sounds like iot makes more sense to know what temp is going INTO the tubo, not out of it.

Anyway fellas, thanks for all the info and support. I am sure Ill need more in time to come. I will post pics of the pillar pod. I went to my local PPG dealer and had him scan the color off the factory piece and mix me up a 1/2 pint. However I have enough left over to piant 20 more of these. So if anyone needs the "grey/tan" to paint there interior pice let me know. Or Ill paint it for ya. The pics show it to be lighter than it actually is. It matches fairly decent. Ill post pics later. Got a new topper for it too......what a truck!

One thing to note. This tank of fuel I am TRYING to follow the "under 2000 rule" and see what milage I get. That is hard enough....nwo qith a boost gauge its even harder ....ha h aha. I did hit it had once and saw ~24lbs before the truck nosed over under a limiter I think.....

I wish I would have read this prior to ordering my pillar setup. I really like this setup and you dont have to kill or paint an apillar. Look at these instructions they are great for either setup as far as plumbing goes.

Again anyone wanting their pillar painted to the grey/tan le me know I have plenty of paint left over!

Passenger side manifold. Most accurate reading, very easy to install.

So if the Probe is installed in the down pipe near the drivers side almost in the middle of the engine, low by the bottom of the engine, how will it effect my reading? This is Pre-Turbo correct? My Pmt Has the option for two Pyros where should I put the next one? Or should I use it at all?

Probe on down pipe would be considered a post turbo install. Most guys add 200 deg due to the gasses cooling a bit. I also tapped the P/S manifold for the Pyro.

For the boost i used the SD Manifold intake ring. Adds 4 taps for the boost. That way I didn't have to drill anything and would have room for any other upgrade is the future. It is a bit expensive but only took about 10 minutes to install.

Thanks for the info! So this means my pyro is reading the temp after it has passed through the turbo and is exiting to the exhaust, right? So a more accurate reading is before the turbo in the manifold? Sorry if this is first grade stuff, I'm still in the learning phase. Thanks to everyone for all the info on this site.

Ok....for thsoe nervous about drilling the manifold......dont be. If you have ANY ability to drill and tap this is one simple project. Also, when they say wear safety glasses they ar not kidding. I drilled and 1/8" pilot hole and then the 21/64. Some pretty darn good pressure camout of there when the larger hole was drilled.

One thing to note if using the greas method on the tap...CLEAN IT OFTEN and MAKE SURE you get the tap started back square. It cocked on me once and I thought I was screwed but it was early on in the depth so no worries.

On other note....dont tap too far initally keep taking it out, cleaning, and test fitting th efitting. If you go too deep you are done. The material taps REALLY easy (casting for ya) and you may think you have not cut enough.

My gauge reads about 7-800 under normal driving. Have not towed yet.

does anyone know what temp to keep it under when towing a load? My pyro probe is in the middle of my manifold (its where the guy drilled it ) the most mine has hit is 1300 to 1350 (that was floored it 110* weather, a 28 foot v hull boat and the chip on stage 2) for about 5 to 10 miles at a time (40 miles up hill) before i caugh some flat areas

I talked with a friend and he said the Edge alarm goes off at 1350, and I think hammering it I got mine to jump to 1200 or so if I remember right. He said his runs about 1100-1200 towing.

Anotehr friend has a (cough) 7.3 powerstroke (cough) and he shows 800 towing, but he has no programmer AND I think his probe is not in the exhaust manifold.

ok. teh edge can be programmed to go off at any temp though and mine came from them at 1250

what yall think about the BD monifold....?

clayt171

expensive. I looked at it but decided a drill and tap were much cheaper. I was able to tap and drill the P/S manifold in about 20 minutes taking my time to make sure I didn't mess up. I don't think most could do a manifold swap in that amount of time. (could be wrong. never done it on one of these) The BD does flow better than the stock D/S but do not think you will see any difference in performance/economy at stock or slightly raised levels.

Anyone have any test/dyno/mpg values on this?

There has been a lot of good information regarding these topics. My question is, according to the "Auto Meter" instructions, you are supposed to mount the Thermocouple probe 1-2" from the Turbo Outlet or about 6" from the manifold junctions.

Why is it better to mount it on the passenger side of the manifold?

I basically fallowed the instructions that came with my gauges when I ordered it from Diesel Manor.

Thanks for the pics, they will be helpful. Why is it better to get the temps before the turbo vs. after?

BD Manifold.......easy to do and you get rid of that massive restriction.
