: LLY or LB7????

Hi,

I have a few questions. I am in the market for a new(er) truck, and would like some info on the LLY & LB7.

I realise there are a few differences, like power & torque, but what about servicibility? Like changing the injectors if they fail. My Dad & I are mechanicly inclined, so jumping into something like that is no problem for us!! How long does it take? ( dmaxallitech & others?? ) And what do the injectors cost?

I dont think I will be adding an Edge to it, well, don't hold me to that!! LOL What things should I look for when buying used, as I dont think I could swing a new one right now? I will be looking for 4wd, but am not sure whether to look for an Alli or a ZF. I suppose if I found a ZF ( pretty rare up here.. ) I would jump on it, as long as it checked out ok.. How about passing emmisions test ( every 2 years up here.... ) for both LB7 & LLY?

Thanks in advance.

Will

My personal preference is for the LB7. I wouldnt worry about the servicability of the engine really. There is more potential right now for the LB7 in terms of upgrades but I dont think the LLY is far behind. As for overall driving, alot have commented on how nice and smooth the LLY is and the overall package, but some of that may be in the truck itself. The later models have many more features and make for a nice truck. I dont think you will be dissapointed either way though. I would look for a good deal and one that you like and go for it.

Hi,

How long does an injector swap take? What is the average life span of the LBY that you have seen? ( actual miles? )

Thanks

Injector swap will take you a solid days work I think, maybe a day and a half for the average DIY guy. I have seen personally LB7 engines with 350k on them and still run very strong.

I think the book hours for an LB7 injector swap is like 10 hours.. the LLY has the injectors on the outside of the motor (just for that reason) and can be replaced very quickly, but more than likely they just replaced the failed injector itself.

LLY injectors are not installed to make them easier to change, that would be about no 10 on a list of 10 reasons why they are there.

Hi,

Thanks for the info! So I really dont need to worry about getting a lemon LB7 or LLY ( if i find one used at a good price!! ) like some of the 6.2 or 6.5 that I have seen up here. Mind you, the ones I have seen were not maintained and abused!!!

Also, Is there a way of telling ( codes??? ) if it has ever had a programmer or been chipped?

Take care

Will

I understand that.. just saying that with all the issues with LB7 injectors and the pain to change them.. this is "one" of the reasons they are on the outside of the motor on the LLY. I realize you know more about this than I do.

I think if the darn valve covers would come off easier on the LB7, the job would be better. Getting to them is easy, gettin a socket on all those rusty crusty 5mm allen head bolts is a major PITA!

On Edit: GM dont think servicability is important in anything they design/build it seems... Gotta be a contorsionist (sp bigtime) to work on anything anymore

The GM engineers are not the only ones... Did the thermostat on my '96 escort ( 1.9L ) last week, what a PITA!! These guys need a major lesson , or the engineers need to work on these!! My Dad's Old VW Rabbit Diesels were heaven to work on!!

Thanks,

Will

Do you need and of those special ( expensive ) specialty tools from Snapon/Mac top do the injectors, or for ease of service on the LB& or LLY?

I have quite an assortment of 5mm allen head sockets to ease the job, only special tool you should have is the injector puller which is Kent Moore.

my personal opinion is that the 6.5 can't get out of it's own way .... get a 6.6 whatever you do and good luck.
