I have a 2005 lly 4x4 and have done only the bare minimum on getting it up to a fun toy to drive. I want to get more out of it without sacrificing too much dependability, I know that there is a trade off for power, but I dont want to have to worry about it constantly by just putting a big tune in it.

Currently I have a Predator on 60hp, egr blocker, fingerstick, and rbp exhaust. I also already had the transmission done with transgo shift kit, and ats torque converter. I get 14.5 mpg and would like to see that get a bit higher like I know some of you have done.

Talked to the guys from ppe this weekend at a show, and am considering doing a few of their mods, including a different programmer as they think that the mpg will increase over the Predator, and it will make it shift better.

I'll leave it at that, please list prices, or estimates of what you recommend so that I can compare when I go get the work done.

Thanks for the help........

First, welcome to the site! Second, please take a minute and go to the User CP link at the top and fill out your sig - takes just a minute and it'll help us all make sure we're giving you the best advice.

Are you lifted? Tires other than stock? While they look great, they'll kill your mileage. Some simple recommendations:

TxC CAI w/stock AC Delco filter - the best $60 you can spend on your truck. Bought me 1-2 MPG.
Reroute your PCV and get that oily mist out of your turbo. $15-$25.
Water/Meth system - Dan Labonte has a new one that's tuned specifically for economy. Comes with a controller that can change on the fly for HP. Final kit cost is elusive, but anticipated in the range of $500-$650. Guaranteed to drop your EGT's and put an extra 50-75 hp at the rear wheels... and you're just injecting windshield washer fluid. We're still waiting to hear the economy numbers...There's tons more you can do... I recommend you read, read, read, then ask a ton of questions. We'll help as best we can. Good luck!

What is the TxC CAI?

What is the TxC CAI?

TxC is an abbreviation of TxChristopher. He developed this cool little chunk of rubber that fits around the stock air box which in turn creates a true CAI - Cold Air Intake - with just the stock air box... which in turn uses the best filter for these trucks - the stock AC Delco filter.

TxC runs this place called CoolMyDuramax.com and is a regular visitor out here as well as a paying vendor. Some have said he tends to be a little opinionated. But he does turn out some cool stuff. The TxC CAI runs all of $60, takes about 15 minutes to install, and will often buy you 1-2 mpg (it did me). YMMV...

If you ever start spending money on his stuff, you need to be prepared to take a couple of grand with you for the CAI, the Rad V2, and now the headers and up-pipes.

As someone else posted out here yesterday, this site = debt. :D

My truck has a 4" exhaust from turbo to tail and 285 rubber on a 2" lift.

I added:

1) the TxCAI - $60,
2) a DiabloSport on the 65 tune - bought used $225,
3) blocked the EGR - $2,
4) plugged the resonator - $3,
5) shaved and polished the turbo inlet pipe - $0,
6) rerouted the PCV - $6

and my DIC mileage range displayed has now moved from 411-418 MPT to 510-512 MPT. Hand calc'ed, I'm doing 19.68 MPG. I know my speedometer is correct as it reads exactly with the Garmin GPS, the Diablo, and the speed clocks the local PD uses to check motorists.

With these mods now done, my average MPG has gone from around 16 beat-around mileage to 19.7 MPG.

That's about a 23% increase in mileage, or it's like paying a one-time $296 for an extra 100 miles per fill-up. With 12-13 fill-ups @$4.70/gallon, these mods will be paid for - quicker done if diesel prices get even higher.

Cooler, cleaner intake air through a less-restrictive inlet tube and a moderate tuning has really improved my vehicle.

If I'd not seen and done it for and by myself, I wouldn't have believed it possible. I am impressed by the advice provided by my fellow D-Max owners here at this forum to boost both efficiency and horsepower.

5) shaved and polished the turbo inlet pipe - $0,

how does one do that?

Per this link and the instruction found there: http://members.cox.net/td-eoc/INDUCTION-THERMAL%20FEEDBACK%20PRIMER.doc shave the portion of the inlet tube of the LLY so that you have a smooth transition at the short side of the elbow's bend.

I then went a step further and polished the intake tube's inside with 5 micron sandpaper until it was smooth after removing any seam or casting imperfections with 180 then 220 grit sandpaper.

I actually used a tub of water to watch the flow into the pipe as I imersed the tube. I could actually see the areas needing attention as I worked the inlet tube over.

OAN: I just filled up and hand calc'ed 19.91 MPG. Here's a pic of my panel - note the range on my 26 gallon tank....says I'm good for about 22 MPG, but of course it will vary with driving conditions.

BTW - I don't have any quantative data suggesting what other steps I chose to do to the intake tube has any significant impact, but there were cast burrs within the tube and I know air has to flow over and around these imperfections and those produce drag.

Those are all gone now....:)
