I only tow in Drive with the tow/haul mode on. When is the time to kick it into 3rd or even 2nd? I tow a 35ft WW trailer that is about 15,000 pounds.

i say never. just put it in tow/haul and let the transmission do its job.

force it to drop a gear if the speed limit on a downhill requires it, like down the grapevine.. only other time i have (other then gooding off) is offroad wanting to limit speed downhill.

Leave it in "D" and let the tranny do its job. As for the downhill stuff, set the cruise and watch it do its job. It will downshift to hold your speed back also. I love it, its like that stupid cooker thing on t.v. "Just set and forget it"

When towing in TH mode, I lock out D when climbing steep inclines and I notice the transmission hunting for a lower gear. Helps to get transmission temps down and, I do not have an EGT gauge but I assume the high revs well assist in that area also.
