: are you happy with the allison
chevy_9465 02-25-2005, 11:36 PM here before long i am hoping to buy a dmax and i am really wanting a 6 spd but its becoming pretty obivous its gonna be hard to find the truck im wantin in a 6 spd. an automatic just seems so boring, but what i was wonderin is if any of you were in my position b4 u bought ur truck. were u happy with the auto after comin from a manual?
thanks
lakingslayer 02-26-2005, 12:15 AM With the Duramax the Allison is less problematic than the manual. The manual tranny has had some flywheel problems. If you wait 'till the '06's come out they are supposed to have a 6speed allison.
pt536 02-26-2005, 12:44 PM I have always had a manual transmission on my trucks, with this one I went with the Allison and would not go back to a manual unless I could not get an Allison. The tow/haul mode with grade braking is fantastic! :muahaha:
nosliw 02-26-2005, 01:16 PM it's a great transmission and you wont be bored. i have my eyes on the tach and windows down listening to her shift all the time.
Jonathan G 02-26-2005, 01:31 PM I have almost 109k on my Allison and you couldn't tell. She shifts beautiful and can handle a lot without having to upgrade it. Don't get me wrong, I don't put my truck to it's limits all the time. Once in a great while I will make my 285 Dunlops tatoo the road in front of my Dodge friend's houses.
wickll 02-26-2005, 02:03 PM This is my first auto in a truck. Got it so the wife could drive it. LOVE IT. Esp. when towing.
DEWFPO 02-26-2005, 02:51 PM This is my first pickup with an automatic in it. The Allison takes some getting use to. I'm not there yet.

ChrisF 02-26-2005, 03:22 PM Love it... I had a Dodge with a 47re and was very unhappy with it ( The trans that is)... But I needed an auto for the wife and Chevy was up to the challenge.. Thats one of the main reasons I went with a Duramax and not a Cummins. Gigity Gigity
bigblackdmax 02-26-2005, 03:25 PM I had thought about buying a manual because I have always liked to drive a manual, but couldn't find one that had leather seats and everything. I am soooo glad that I got the allison, no regrets.
makeyoufamous 02-26-2005, 08:09 PM First auto I have ever ran. Tow a lot and so far so good. The only downfall is driving off steep logging roads with a load and towhaul won't hold you back. But neither will first gear on switche backs so you have to use your brakes quite a bit. That is the only time i wish i had my stick back.
Grey Ghost 02-26-2005, 08:20 PM I had not owned (until now) an automatic due to the nutlessness of the previous ones. You will not/can not go wrong with the Allison. Dot the i's, and cross the t's. I just cannot say enough good things about it.:ro) :ro)

Gray Max 02-27-2005, 09:54 AM I have a 6 speed and am going to an auto. I have a dual disc puller which is not working out real well for pulling the trailer. The ZF tranny is strong but the stock flywheel is junk. If the flywheel was fixed I think the stock clutch would hold about 100 RWHP over stock. There are single disc clutches available for the 6 speed that is a better option for street driven trucks. My advise is to go with the allison, but I know where there is an 03 six speed regular cab for sale. PM me if you want info.
Rockin 02-27-2005, 10:44 AM I love my allison. for towing, there is no other way...
DMaxEnvy 02-27-2005, 11:33 AM I love it! The grade braking is great. Shifts great, and handles a heavy load wonderfully. Won't have a manual on a heavy truck again!
I leave the manual transmission for my high revving BMW ;)

catch007 02-27-2005, 07:05 PM Best automatic transmission I've ever driven in a truck! Great for towing. You won't regret getting the allison.
duramaximizer 02-27-2005, 09:34 PM we love ours and have no regrets
Enzo71 02-27-2005, 10:22 PM Never wanted a "slushbox" as my grandpa called them, but I love the Allison.
Reineke 02-28-2005, 03:52 AM To answer your question, I am extremely happy with the Allison. It has exceeded my expectations through smooth shifts to the grade brake features. I like how in Tow/Haul mode it downshifts to help slow the load while stopping. Also has easy maintenance with the spin-on filter. I'd give it a 10 out of 10!
