: 285/75 Tires...
F.B.I 07-10-2008, 03:39 PM hi everybody
On my 99' suburban 6.5 (I do not know if it's 1500 or 2500) I mounted 285/75 tires...but several friends tell me that it will damaged my engine or the transsmision...that is correct ?
thanks:cool:
odlaw 07-10-2008, 03:47 PM The factory tire size should be on the sticker in the door jamb. If the tires you put on are too much taller than stock then yes, you could damage things like tanny's, clutches, etc. Not to mention, without re-gearing you would probably have noticeable performance issues.
You should be able to tell if you have a 1500 or 2500 by counting the lugnuts on each wheel - 1500 should have 6 and 2500 (normally) has 8 with a few exceptions....I just looked at the pix in your garage and it looks like you have a 3/4 ton but from the pix I couldn't quite read the emblem on the doors.....I swear one of them says 1500..maybe someone did a running gear swap because you clearly have 8 lugs.
Here is one of the handiest tire calculators I've ever seen - just punch in your stock size and then the size of the current tires and it will tell you exactly how much taller the tires are. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html You can probably go two inches taller without much problem....especially if you're not towing anything real heavy.
Nice lookin suburban by the way!

Kevin Doe 07-10-2008, 04:35 PM Yeah, I don't think he is on par with his advice.
joispoi 07-10-2008, 04:43 PM YouŽll be just fine.
acctech 07-10-2008, 04:46 PM 1500 Series Suburbans all have 2500 Series Running Gear, its a technicality that its not a 2500.
As for the big tires, no real harm other than performance loss and braking loss, but there are lots of lifted trucks on the road, not much to worry about.
screws 07-10-2008, 04:52 PM I have been running these tires for the last 2 years and haven't had a problem. I have a little frame rub turning all the way left. I think it hurt my MPG, although I added them about the same time I rebuilt to 18:1. So hard to say but given that they are heavier and have more rotational enertia, I gotta believe they will not help MPG.
13Fox 07-10-2008, 07:36 PM I had a buddy that bought a '97 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 and put 285s on it. About 6 mos later the tranny went out, like many from that time frame did, and the dealer told him it was because of the big tires changing the shift points in the tranny. I called BS but he paid for it anyway. I think you'll be fine other than a little mpg loss.

It was a Dodge tranny, NOT a 4L80E in a Chevy. The Dodge auto trannys are known for its crap.
I'm also running 285/75/16 incl. a 3" Rancho Supension Lift. No Problems.
The only thing these tires do is that the speedo is a bit of, but who cares. I don't look at it in the most time, so it doesn't bother.

:exactly:
I had a '96 Z-71 with 7" lift and 35's on stock gearing. It was fine. It was definitely slower than when I had 33's. When I went from the stock 265's to the 33's I didn't notice any difference in performance.

i dont thikk so. i have had both the 1500 had 6 lugs and the crappy 10 bolt rear, the 2500 has 8 lugs and a noticeably stouter rearend.
F.B.I 07-22-2008, 12:11 PM the stock tires are 245/75 :p:

The tranny went out 'cause it was a DODGE POS, LOL! That is a poor comparison since the tranny probably would have gone bad regardless of what tires he had on it.
txboozehound 07-22-2008, 04:50 PM Im on my 4th truck on 285's and no drive train or motor probs yet. "knock on wood";)

Yeah, I wasn't trying to compare, just let him know that there are people that will try to tell you that you will cause problems with bigger tires. I am on my 5th truck(all GM's of course) with bigger tires than stock and I have never had a problem related to the tires with any of them.
Your are right about the Dodge trannys.
