I ran across a thread once stating that the vortec 6.0L intake is a great upgrade to the LLY!? Supposidly it has the ducts that pulls the air through fender area. Am I smoking something silly or has anyone heard of this?

I believe that the 6 liter style intake came on the early LB7's and was too restrictive. I read this a long time ago so I don't remember any details. Also a member named "Killerbee" modified an 6 liter intake to create a "cold air intake" a while back for the LLY. This is probably the thread that you remember.

Good Stuff!

I ran a gasser air box for a while. Not sure of the vintage but it was direct fit and had the fender snorkle. Just had to remove the crappy tape they put on the fender holes.

Barry,
If you plan on towing heavy where you need the turbo, then this intake will cause some restriction, my filter minder pegged on the first hill with a brand new GM Duramax filter. There is a very simple item that can be bought that will make your stock air box reject the under hood heat, take advantage of those holes in the fender, not create any issues with restrictions, and will not pull water into the filter unless you dunk the front of the truck up to the box.

Thank you....do you think just remove the insulation off from the hole in the fender?

Removing the tape will help until the engine fan gets going, then the entire engine compartment will pressurize.

Do this easy test, start the truck with the hood closed and go feel the air near the seam where the airbox is located. Once you get over the shock, get a TX CAI and you can isolate that from your intake.

^^^^^^ WHAT HE SAID X2 !!!!! Tx's CAI!

I went one step further and drilled a 4"hole in the bottom of the airbob and installed a metal flex hose forward, under the headlight and down to behind the bumper. works fine!
I also have the V2!!!

Here is the link I was looking for earlier about the result of using a stock 6.0 airbox and the mods:

I had the Tx C's CAI kit on before and may be installing it again soon. It does the same thing at a fraction of the price of the other set up.

At "Put Up Or Shut Up" at Kennedy Diesel in Wisconsin the TXC CAI handily defeated the modified stock box in controlled dyno testing while monitoring many variables.

BUT

If your heart is set on the GM lower box it is way better than the open ended factory box. Its just not the best and surely not the best $$$$ wise.

Hey TxC,

What do you mean by a "GM lower box"? The LBZ airbox?

I used your kit, factory LLY box with the foil removed. The opening in the LLY airbox seems plenty big enough. But I am no expert.
