: Need Help Finding Stepper Motor
peters31 02-25-2005, 09:23 AM Could Somone tell me where the stepper motor is?
I tried looking underneath the coolant crossover and I cant see it. Is it under the round black connector on the left side of the pump???
quantum mechanic 02-25-2005, 09:32 AM It's on the passengerside of the pump. you can't miss it. It's a cylinder with a mechanism under it.
peters31 02-25-2005, 10:07 AM how far back on the pump is it? and which way should the foot be pointing? up,down or to the side?
MFParker 02-25-2005, 10:19 AM Here's a picture of a pump removed from the 6.5 td. The stepper motor is the chrome part on the side of the pump. It's in the center of the picture. It will be on the passenger side, first thing back on your left as you look at the pump on the engine. It has a wire harness connected to it with 4 leads. It is almost if not impossible to work on without removing the intake manifold and the IP from the engine.
peters31 02-25-2005, 10:27 AM thanks! how far does the foot usually come out?
steelydan 02-25-2005, 02:35 PM I was getting a fault 34 on my '95 (stepper motor) I removed the stepper motor from the pump while on the truck. It is possible, but difficult. Mine was not moving at all when the accelerator was pushed. It should pull up into the pump with increase in rpm.
You can see it on the passenger side, look right past the coolant crossover from front of vehicle with a flashlight. The screws are Torx. I used WD-40 on mine and it freed up and is still working good. The hardest part is re-installing the hook of the stepper on the linkage that it pulls.
peters31 02-25-2005, 05:01 PM did your service engine light come on when the motor went? Or did u find that code just through a scanner?
steelydan 02-26-2005, 01:20 AM The SES light would come on when I was towing or had my foot in it up a hill.
Scanner not required for diagnosing OBD1 Trucks.. Check FAQ section for details on how to check for codes.
peters31 02-26-2005, 11:51 PM I checked for codes but 12 just kept flashing over and over.
hey do u know what that adjustment screw on the pump inside the fuel hose does?
I turned it counterclockwise and I got alot of power. Before, my truck wouldnt spin on dirt and now I can spin on tar.
quantum mechanic 02-27-2005, 09:20 AM You increased your intrenal transfer pressure. iirc How much did you turn it?
Diesel-Pro says he tested increasing the pressure on a calibration bench and it only slightly increased fuel 2-3mm3 per stroke.
DieselPro 02-27-2005, 09:27 AM To increase transfer pump pressure you turn the regulator screw clockwise. I am wondering if this is a troll thread.
peters31 02-27-2005, 11:18 AM when i turned it clockwise it started to burn lots of fuel and just a little bit more power was made. My truck has always had this problem of kicking on for a second then shutting down again making the bendix pop in and out, after a few more strokes it starts right up.
When I turned it counter clockwise about 3/4 turns back I gained alot of HP and my trucks problem is gettin better and better the more i turn it!
I wonder if a mechanic turned it way too high so the previous owner would keep coming back trying to fix the starting problem?
DieselPro 02-27-2005, 12:28 PM That sounds about right. Need to back it out some more till it starts skipping then turn it back in 15/16th's of a turn. Might want to check and see if he used muffler bearing shims under your starter. They are heat treated and won't distort like regular washers.
peters31 02-27-2005, 02:55 PM Thats what I wanted to hear! Ive been trying to fix this problem for about a year now.
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 02:59 PM I'm still trying to imagine how decreasing transfer pressure can improve anything...
Did you verify that your stepper motor is indeed siezed? If its operating while someone is revving the engine, then you just need to adjust the pump's static timing to get the proper TDC offset.
peters31 02-27-2005, 03:09 PM I have taken my truck to 2 diesel mechanics to get the pump timed and both times it didnt start any better. One mechanic timed it to -1.15 and the other set it to stock timing.
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 03:12 PM If they are able to set the TDC offset then the stepper motor must be working. is this an intermittent problem? Do you get any other codes?
peters31 02-27-2005, 03:18 PM I checked for codes and none showed just the 12 code flashed. Its not intermittent, happens all the time. Seems to be a little worse when warm, almost like it wants to start too fast and dosnt succeed. It dosnt turn over too long though just after one full turn it does that kick on kick off thing and about 2 more cranks then it starts. So I know its not the PMD or Pump.
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 04:16 PM Maybe I don't understand what your describing, but it sounds like it could be an injection pump problem to me. I would agree with you on ruling out the PMD though. How many miles on the pump?
peters31 02-27-2005, 04:24 PM 312000 Km. The mechanic sent my pump to get rebuilt around 290,000 km. They put on a new fuel solenoid and said everything was fine. The mechanic actually sent it back the first time he got it. They told him there was nothing wrong with it, so he sent it back. when it came the second time they had put a fuel solenoid on it.
DieselPro 02-27-2005, 04:31 PM Sounds like a faulty Johnson rod stiffener.
peters31 02-27-2005, 04:34 PM whats that?
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 04:57 PM Fuel Solenoid is just one component in a complex electronic injection pump. I'm concerned with Transfer pump, Head&Rotor, delivery valves just as much as the FSOL.
Did you just recently purchase this truck?
peters31 02-27-2005, 04:59 PM why does it seem to be getting better the further back i turn the screw?
peters31 02-27-2005, 05:01 PM its back about 3 full turns
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 05:09 PM I'm trying to figure that one out myself...
Seems to me that if tampering with it, especially doing something that should make it worse, could be an indication that your problem is somewhere in the pump.
peters31 02-27-2005, 06:23 PM How many turns will that screw go? Or will it just keep going and going. will this hurt anything
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 07:01 PM It's got a lot of room for adjustment, keep going down (C) and it will eventually bottom, keep going up (CC) and it will come out. You don't want to do either one of these. Going way out of adjustment either will effect performance and function.
gmctd 02-27-2005, 07:05 PM Fresnel, Diesel Pro?
peters31 02-27-2005, 07:30 PM does the screw affect fuel rate?
if so what is the fuel rate supposed to be when idling?
Texas Diesel Guy 02-27-2005, 07:40 PM I don't know, I don't know much about this stuff, just guessin here.
DieselPro 02-27-2005, 07:41 PM If you back the screw out to far the fresnel lens in th optic sensor will loose transmitter focus and will distort the readings to the computer. Main reason for distortion is cavitation of the fuel causing small air bubbles in the fuel. Once it starts to skip screw in 15/16th's. Pressure gauge would be highly recommended. Winter fuel will be more prone to cause problems. Use kerosene additive to improve viscosity.

peters31 02-27-2005, 08:06 PM By skip do u mean miss?
DieselPro 02-27-2005, 08:14 PM Right> skip/ miss same thing. What is your injection pump number, and what year is it?
peters31 02-27-2005, 08:53 PM Im not sure, isnt that info on the back of the pump?
Turbine Doc 02-27-2005, 10:32 PM Not up up to us mortal Mods have to take it up with higher authority aka Diesel Power or Mackin
Hey I've got a 100 posts now. Could the moderators please change my name to "DieselPro" without the - ???
quantum mechanic 02-27-2005, 10:56 PM Hey I've got a 100 posts now. Could the moderators please change my name to "DieselPro" without the - ???I would if I could.
DieselPro 02-27-2005, 11:22 PM Well if everybody would send the head echelons a message, perhaps the grand wizards could take the "-" out. Ya'll don't know how hard it is to go around this site with people wondering who Diesel minus Pro is. People don't know how hard it is to become a Pro, much less a DieselPro.
Sign me DieselPro without the minus please.
Thanks for all that helped The Grand Wizard has now cleared my handle.
:) DieselPro :)
gmctd 02-28-2005, 07:51 AM Mebbe they think it gives your handle more......."dash", and pizzaz!;)
DieselPro 02-28-2005, 06:24 PM Thanks to all! I now have my handle back! Been a long time coming so I am determined to keep it. Hope to help those in need and confuse all others, or is that the other way around? Need my fresnel lens so I can stay focused. Anybody know where I can find a cheap one? Preferably plastic? Better yet does anyone know how I can cut one in a lathe?
Thanks again to this site and the grand wizards who orchestrate this grand empire.
gmctd 02-28-2005, 08:40 PM Well - there goes your dash - you'll just have to rely on pizzaz only!
Congrats, dude...
