why does the engine make more noise AFTER uploading a performance program? What is making it sound like a sewing machine??

Assuming everything is OK otherwise, the noise is generally due to advanced timing. Some are better than others. One brand of tuner has been dubbed "rattle can technology" by one of the Jedi here.

detonate,

If you're running the predator, I'm surprised that it is noisier...maybe when cold, but I am running the 40hp tune and I think, honestly, that it runs quieter when warmed up. Haven't tried any of the other tunes...probably won't till a transmission upgrade is in.

The 100 sounds OK to me. Not sure what the other tunes sound like, I'm tone deaf. ;)

i know you dont wanna be a genital to anyone but which brand is it that has been dubbed. if it has been dubbed that then your just repeating what you heard, its not your personal opinion. so come out from behind that tree and spit it out. i tried to use the schwarts to no avail.

jmg343-He is referring to the quadzilla, forget offhand who called it that.. I could guess but I hate to guess wrong. You have to be carefull mentioning quad around here, he used to be a member, but some of the guys really.. are not fond of him..

As to rattle, mine sounds about the same on 65 when cold, maybe just a tiny bit louder. When warmed up it sounds almost quieter than stock.

What program on your 05 I assume? When is it noisy?

In reference to LB7's.... Yes the big quad is noisy. Lotsa timing. Some that run it dont seem to mind and I dont believe that anyone can point a finger and say the timing has blown anything up. But it is kinda anoying and all the timing cant be good, weather its really that bad:confused:

I've tried both the 65 and 40 hp tunes on mine. I prefer the 40 for everyday driving. Not as touchy and IMO I think it's as quiet as stock. I thought the 65 was a little loud, ecspecially when cold.

My truck has always been a little noisier cold than warm when it was stock, with the Edge, and with the predator. It quiets up when the temp guage hits around 140deg.

Ah, the force is weak with this one.....

Trying you must keep.

I know first hand that the Bullydog Power Pup for the LLY really makes that motor loud.

It has to do with the timing maps.
There are many timing maps in the computer for different conditions.
Like when cold the computer adds up to 12 degrees to the pilot injection.
Most of the performance programs just add timing to the main timing map, So what ever they are adding Plus the cold start advance makes them rattle so loud I am scared to drive the truck until fully warmed up.

I worked with manufacturers to cure this problem and some have.

One other area I have been begging for is turbo control in the performance boxes and programs and so far :(

Thanks for all your replies but I never got an answer. Everyone either agreed or disagreed about making noise!

Why does it make more noise with the programming? I understand that the programmers control total fuel "on-time" and duration for starters. Is the lighting of the fuel at a different time increasing the knock?? Just grasping at reasonable ideas....

Newbies....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif Read!

The noise is from the program advancing the timing. Different tuners apply varing amounts of advance.

Secondly, if the tuner also messes with the pilot injection, that could contribute. For example, your truck at wide open throttle, running over 2600ish rpm, the pilot injection shuts off, and the engine gets a whole lot louder. This is what your truck would sound like with no pilot injection - noisy like a traditional mechanically injected diesel.

So what we're all trying to tell you, is that any amount of advancing timing, either in the pilot injection, or the main fuel shot, changes the sound of the engine.

Enough?
