Will other year modles work? Or is this what I really need to find.

The 77-79 Ford D-60 is the strongest but probably the hardest to find, the later D-60's are still High Pinion but have ball joints and are also around 3" wider in width. IMO the later D-60's are still plenty strong for most applications. You would have to do some measuring to verify that you can use the later D-60's.

Yea, looks like I got to do some junkyard hunting lol. What about the dodge axle, ain't that working to, or is it weaker than the dana 60?

You can get a Dodge D60, I believe there's no issues there other than (iirc) it's wider. I believe that's the axle people use to keep their ABS working.

FYI, the D60 was only in F-350's and F-250 Plow Package (or Hi-Boy). Regular F-250's had a Dana 44HD. Same bolt pattern, but not as strong. Depending on what you are going to be doing, it may work for you.

One thing I wanted to ask the board was about the Chevy pass side D60's. Theoretically, you should be able to cut out the tubes and switch the placing of the differential to the driver's side. I know with some Yota diffs people cut the face of the cover out and invert the diff gearset, then invert it again by flipping the entire axle over. This switches driver to passenger (or vice versa), however with the D60 the oblong gear casing probably wouldn't support that.

The problem is then when you cut through the tubes, you are cutting through the support elements of the axle (vs. the casing). Is it possible to weld and reinforce it enough for it to bear the necessary strength on the trail?
