Just got a 14" drop hitch. It's rated at 500 tounge, 5000 trailer. I'm only towing a 3k trailer...

Would backstrapping be nescicary because of the extra leverage? What's the rule of thumb?

Have you read any of the posts about factory hitches. They are a known weak spot. I would get rid of it. I have seen several pics of them twisted to hell. Your big drop is only going to increase that leverage.
