I just changed my fuel filter (thanks to Eric's excellent directions). I purchased the truck used with 40K miles on it. I don't know if this was the original filter or not. Any comments/ideas on this? When should I consider changing the new filter? Thanks all.

eewww thats nasty! Id change the new one in 5 thousand miles. I change mine every 5grand to ensure clean fuel, the filters arent too expensive and it takes minutes to change.

that is a VERY dirty filter. GM says every 10k miles. Most used filters are still white on top. Yours was completely crudded up. SPICER

What like 30,000 miles? Original DMax plant install?

I have been changing mine every 12,500 and it does not look near as bad as your, about 3/4" of the filter is dark like your whole filter. I was a little concered about the rusty crude that came out when I dumped the fuel out, maybe I need to drain it every 3000 or so??????

I just changed mine this past weekend. There was very little rusty like stuff down in the water plug. Almost 15K miles.

Just make sure you change your filter every 10-15k and you shouldnt have any problems, also just to be safe use the new double pleate filter. Ive found it on GMDieseltech.com for 30 dollars.

I have now driven it for a day and 1/2 since changing that nasty filter. Still don't see any improvement in performance or gas mileage (using the DIC). I would have expected to see something????

wow you guys do have ****ty fuel down their, i have only replaced 3 filters in almost 100k, and never seen rust, let alone that much, filter looks very dirty, but the dirt should stay in the filter, but water contamination is another thing, might want to add a water seperator filter in front of that one, your poor pump and injectors

Be glad you DIDNT see what COULD have happened!

I change mine every 10k along with the oil and spin on Allison filter.

wowo that looks horribe... i'd suggest a good additive (primrose or FPPF total power) to tie up some of that water..

i know if you run a pre-oem filter about 85% of the rust will stay in the first filter and not pass to the oem....

Yeah, that's pretty ugly. I'd also start draining the water about once a week.

Every second oil change for me... filters are cheap insurance

Thanks guys. Do you drain the water by just loosening the WIF on the bottom of the filter? Is there more to it than that? Thanks.

I've seen one worse and NO difference in performance was felt on change on a 02.My buddy had nearly 40K on it. :D

Yes, just loosen the WIF at bottom to drain. Just make sure the truck is off or you will suck air in instead. Put a little cup under it to catch the water/fuel, you should be able to see when clean fuel is coming out of drain.
