I've got a new '05 Duramax that has less than 1500 miles on it:). Just wondering if anyone else out there can put more than 20 ga. in their tank when they go to refuel? I know the DIC can be off, but the last 3 times I've fueled up it said I could only go 25-75 more miles, the low fuel light was on (every time-the last 2 on purpose), the gauge was bottomed and the most I've been able to put in it was 19.7 ga. (and I've filled it 'til I see fuel-which I suppose is to full).

Anyone else's truck do this?

Also, is Hypertech coming out with a new programmer? I'm wanting to get one but my local dealer says I should wait about 3-4 weeks because they are upgrading the HTIII?

The questions lies as to which truck you have. Do you have a longbed or shortbed truck and is it ext. cab or etc..? That will determine the size of your fuel tank.

I've got an '05 4 Door 2500HD LT 4x4 shortbed. The first 2 times I turned the truck off, the last time I left it running and that's the time I got the most fuel in it?

You've got a 26 gallon tank IIRC.

Foaming is a problem with diesel. Often if you let the tank settle for a couple of minutes, you can get a couple more gallons in it. I've filled it to where I can see the fuel. I have also soaked my truck down a couple times until I got used to it. ;)

I have noticed the same thing, I have an 05 short bed, 7500 miles. Most ive put in is just over 20. I figured it would take at least 23 or so. When i fill i wait for the shutoff and then pull the nozzle out a little and fill til i see the fuel up to the filler neck.

I'm prob going to get an auxilary tank in the bed or put in a supertank. I want to be able to go 600 or more highway miles empty without filling.

I had a suburban before this truck and it held 42 gallons, i loved the range. I want that in this truck (my longest range to date is 336 miles).

Yeah, I thought it had a 26 ga. tank. I've never run a diesel out of fuel, but I've heard from my buddies that you DON'T want to do that! I'm tempted to put a 5 ga. tank with fuel in the back and see how far I can go when the light comes on.:badidea: ???

It's not a very good idea. You'll have to prime the system before you can start it up again. Look in your owners manual and you will see the process you will have to go through. It's not just adding more fuel and starting up like you would in a gasser.

Your truck has a bleeder and fuel primer on top of the fuel filter on the passenger side of the engine compartment. While I would not recommend running out of fuel, it's not as bad as running out in an old style diesel. If you run out, put fuel in it, open the plastic bleeder, pump the primer until fuel comes out, close bleeder, and fire it up.

I fuel with the engine running and wait for the foam to settle, I can get 2 more gallons in this way. I have put around 23-25 gallons in and no low fuel light. I have also been using disposable gloves when fueling. All the nozzles I have seen are a mess. No more diesel fuel on me. The diesel pumps are always dirty,,not like the regular gas..

Knees,

Do a search for for "out of fuel", or "low fuel", etc. You will find threads from folks stating that there is very little warning from when the message comes on to when the truck runs out of fuel. As I recall, they can put in about 25 gallons after the light comes on. So, I would not expect it to come on at 19 gallons.

Do you have any performance programmers/chips on your truck? If so, this will cause the computer to have invalid data, which could account for message showing up sooner than expected. Also, make sure the fuel island drive is level.

i get 29-30 gallons in, about 10 miles after light comes on. I also get a range of 500-540 miles per tank.

I also experienced this type of problem. My fuel light never comes on cause I never let it get to that point. Both trucks are long beds so it is a 34 gallon tank I believe. But the 03 will go for 600 miles before I put fuel in it. And the 05 with go about 375-400 before I fuel it up I end up putting about 22 gallons in the 05 yet the 03 gets about 26-29 gallons in it(Guages read the same in both at that point). I think the gause is computer controlled so they might have tweaked the guages a little bit so runnung out of fuel is close to imposible on the new ones. Don't know for sure but something is definatly different between the 03 LB7 and 05 LLY guages.

No chip/programmer yet (trying to decide which one). I don't get it though. I really don't want to run this thing out of fuel to check it--who knows though, maybe I can run another 100 miles when my light comes on.

I have found the DIC to be accurate in regards to the "miles left before you run out". I have taken down to 10 miles and the fill up was 25 gallons. You can easily add 2 gallons + if you want to stand there playing with the pump waiting for the foam to stop.

I started carrying 2 - 10 gallon cans of fuel when we go on extended camping trips. Seeing 10 miles to go before you run out of fuel, with a trailer on the back, in the middle of no-where New Brunswick is hard on the nerves. Plus the flack from the co-pilot is hard on the ears. :)

Having that light go on in West Texas or New Mexico at night is like having 10 cups of coffee all at once. You suddenly get very aware of your surroundings. ;)

Something is wrong with this picture.

I have an 05 x-cab 2 wheel drive base model (automatic)

I have my predator on 85 hp setting........I flog the **** out of my truck and my red light NEVER comes on before 400 miles on the trip o meter........That is around town........I have not taken it on a highway trip yet.........Just mailed in my first payment and already have 5500 miles on the truck....100% stop and go city driving. :ro)

I put 30 gallons in my truck the other day... :badidea:

Turns out, about 8 of that was on the ground! Damn pump never shut off! Needless to say it was Freezing out and I was sitting in my truck like an idiot!
Nothing like wasting 16$ on melting snow and pollution!

Now I stand outside, or pay MUCH closer attention to what's going on.

And yes, I'm aware of the static hazard when getting in/out of truck, I always touch metal before pump....

My dad had an early 80's suburban that held 40+ gallons.....we would take that thing on a pheasant hunt and NEVER have to refuel!:) Anyway, I probably shouldn't do it, but I'm putting 5 ga. of fuel in the truck and I'm going to see exactly what I'm up against. I've got a buddy who has a powerstroke (his 3rd--I'm trying to convert him!) and has a construction co. with a lot of diesel's--he's had to "bleed" more than one or two. He's going to ride with me this weekend when I get low. We'll see......
