: Predator in, tranny is slippin' 1,2,3??
Detonate 02-23-2005, 07:15 PM Planned on putting 2K on the truck, yankin the tranny, stuffing a kit and converter and THEN stuffing some programming into it. We'll.....the Predator showed up today and you know the rest! NO self control! Anyway I loaded up the 65 HP tune. No problem. The truck pulls like a MTF!! Only issue, and it's a big one, is that the tranny slips like crazy leaving 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Before I get all pissed off and pull the tune out, I wanted to verify a couple things. I thought I had read that with the "adaptive learn" capabilities of the Allison that if the truck has been driven "light" it will shift light and shift harder under harder driving. I have to admit I have been milking the truck for the most part trying to push the most MPG out of the DIC. Is it possible that since the program is adding a decent amount of additional power that the tranny is still shifting like it had stock power levels? I spoke to someone (one of the forum tranny specialist) a couple weeks ago and they told me that they have had guys that come in for Stage 4 tranny upgrades that have been driving the balls out of there trucks and when they install the new harder shifting tranny that they need to reset the computer because the trucks are shifting to hard. Mainly because the beefed up tranny is mechanically shifting harder combined with the computers command to shift harder. If this is the case, can I expect this tranny to firm up or do I have a problem? I am concerned about driving it like this on a truck with 1,100 miles on it. Maybe I should have waited as originally planned!
Oh yeah....I tried driving the truck in T/H mode and its seems to shift better but still slips more then I think it should. I also noticed that in both modes it shifts at redline!:ro) How long does it take for the adaptive learn to start pulling its shift patterns around? Did I read somewhere that you can reset the tranny back to a base learn?? How?? Do you need a TECH2?
Need some words of wisdom!
Thanks
Howard
bartman 02-23-2005, 07:20 PM Just give it some time...it will settle down. Best thing to do is drive it like you stole it. I was scared at first, too, but it makes the learning curve a lot faster. The exagerated shifts are pretty normal at first.
McRat 02-23-2005, 07:22 PM Put the hammer down and hang on. ;)
Detonate 02-23-2005, 07:24 PM I am a big gas tuner guy and feel kind of helpless with these programmers because I am used to tuning LS1 cars on the dyno and controlling my destiny!!
What exactly are there programmers controlling?? Do they control the Allisons shifting or is the Allison reacting to the power increase?
Thanks for the encouragment!!
NCMIC 02-23-2005, 07:40 PM You are altering the data in the PCM and not the TCM. Give the truck time to learn it. Drive any way you want and it will learn it. You should notice it being back to normal within a week, if you don't drive much and baby it.
DMAX POWER007 02-23-2005, 08:55 PM Get in the truck, accelerate pretty aggessively until the TC locked in 5th gear. (about 65mph or so) Let off the gas pedal and put the truck into gear 1. Let the tranny down shift on its own all the way back down to first gear. Don't worry, there is tranny protection built in to allow this to happen. Do that 6-7 times over a 25 mile or so span and the tranny will learn much quicker. I read this procedure on DIablo Sport's web site. (I think) I tried it with my Edge and it works. Once the tranny learns, you'll be fine.
Detonate 02-23-2005, 08:55 PM Just got back from a 50 MPH to 1st gear deceleration excerise. WOW!!:ro) What a difference already! The slipping diminished greatly and the truck feels real strong. Thank god for this forum!!!
Is it me or is the truck sounding louder???? Also should the boost level be higher or is the power mainly coming from a fuel increase?
DMAX POWER007 02-23-2005, 09:08 PM Fuel increase= more exhaust heat= faster turbo spool= more power.:D
nwpadmax 02-23-2005, 10:26 PM I might be wrong, but it seems to me that some time ago the "drop 'er in first" procedure was kinda gotten away from. There was a lot of discussion about the pros and cons and it seems to me that it was agreed that the drop shift wasn't living up to its urban legend (apparently it didn't put the Alli in any kind of "teach" mode).
On mine, it learns quickly when you do a fair amount of wide open throttle driving from a stop.
Drop a PM to Mike L or Dmaxallitech and they can tell you everything you need to know.

I tried mine by driving on lowest setting. Took 100 miles or so to learn. went from level 1 to level 4. SHifted awful. Tried the "drop'er in 1st" method and the alli learned in about 20 miles or so. That's my experience though. I say it works.

this is the "drop er in 1st" method you are talking about, correct? I would be terrified to do that in my truck. I already get a clunk that I dont like if I shift into 1st going 30mph. If I did it at 65 I think something would have to blow, but I guess Im wrong.
I dont have the predator or edge yet but will have one before the end of the month. Im killing myself trying to decide which one, I cant even sleep! How important/helpful is the edge's defuel feature?
Kennedy 02-24-2005, 12:09 AM Drive it EASY till it learns. No need to beat the snot out of the clutches.
The Allison will learn at a moderate pace, and seems to enjoy some shut down recovery time in between sessions...
dmaxalliTech 02-24-2005, 12:26 AM The drop to first method does not much more then confuse the TCM.. A Scan tool will show that nothing has changed in the adapts.

once more? in english please.
Detonate 02-24-2005, 08:28 AM Ah! The enigma of the GM computer! Seems like NO ONE truly understands how the Allisons TCM works. We know so much but yet no so little......
All can comment on about this, seeing that I started the thread, is that as soon as the programming was uploaded the shifting was horrible. I mean slipping like an old ford tranny down 3 quarts. After some driving 15-20 miles, it stated tightening up some but still noticable slip.
I then took the info provided on this thread and tried the 50-1 method. Within 2-3 attempts the tranny was 90 %. Something greatly sped up the learning process.......
As far as dropping it into 1 st at 50 MPH; The TCM seems to not allow the truck to go straight to first gear. It will down shift at its own control until it reaches first. You are not going to blow anything up.
