Just got my exhaust and was just wondering if there would be any great benefit of getting my exhaust welded up instead of using the clamps.

Well if you ever need to take it off for any reason you might be screwed. Id use beveled band clamps personally. Get them at napa or wherever, they dont crimp the pipes down to were you cant ever get them off and they seal good.

I've read that welding up the system cures drone. No personal exp, but it sounds reasonable.

I've never heard of that before. How would that help the drone? I can't see how it would make a difference.

I would just tack the tip on, along with the clamps. Those tips have been known to dissapear when your truck is parked in a parking lot.

Torco band clamps allow you to adjust or remove the pipes if nessecary, and a tip seemed to quiet down & remove the minimal drone from my Magnaflow 5".

THis is Theory here, but....

If you have 4 pipes / muffler in the system and they are held together by clamps, there is some independant motion between them. If you crawl under the truck and whack each part with a tack hammer, there will be a different sound as each part "rings".

Some drone is from the harmonic resonance of the pipe / muffler or what not ringing at the same frequency as the exhaust pulse.

If you solidly weld the pipes / muffler together into 1 piece, the resonance point is changed. The sound you get when smacking it with the same hammer changes (I HAVE seen that and know it to be true). So, if there was a harmonic resonance drone, it may go away with a welded system.

It also adds mass to the effective component (whole welded system vs individual part weights). The higher mass requires a higher energy to "ring" with the same amplitude. Means it is quieter with the same exhaust pulse.

Last point would be if the clamps were at all loose. A drone could be caused by pipes flexing and rubbing where a welded system wouldn't move.

I'm no muffler guy, but .... it sound reasonable and since I have a mig welder ....

Im facing the same question and I think Im leading towards those band clamps...anyone know how much those clamps cost?

If you are going to weld it. This is good advice.

4" torco clamps are $8.00 a piece, roughly, and 5" clamps are roughly $7.50 a piece. the reason the 5" is less is because they are more commonly used on big rigs.

If you are referring to the flat style clamps. I just bought s.s. 304 ones for $9 for the 4" ones.

these 5" clamps are the big flat sheets that dont crimp like normal clamps correct? can you pick em up at Oreillys or do you have to go to a truck riggins shop?

I have the dual walled mprp tip on mine and it has the 2 tabs for the bolt to run through, so i put a locking washer in between them then tightened it all the way down to where it locked. Just an alternative to welding.

Mine rattled loose cause of dirt roads. I clamped them down with a 1/2" impact so they were tight. After that I put a tack on the bottom of all the joints so if I did take em off they`d be easy to grind. As far as the tip. If someone could get it off they earned it. I had to beat it on with a sledge and a 2x4. T-I-G-H-T

That's my same take on it. They must want it a helluvalot more than i want it.
