i am going to be going to the local pull in a few weeks. i am put in the same class with all the duallys and all of them are diesels but me .i have pulled with them before and have done well but i just locked it in first and held it to the floor and the rev limiter would hit at just under 4000rpm and IT would kill the power and momentum  i was also pulling with warnout tires then but have new ones now!! also this will be my 3rd pull! and truck is stock.

? is it ok to put the truck in 3rd tow/haul and go or just leave it in first??

anyone ever pull there 8.1 with the diesels?

anyone ever pull there 8.1 with the diesels? If you had a turbo, or a whipple, and N20 you would probably stand a good chance. What are your modds?

u need a minimum of a hypertech or superchips to up your rev limiter. i had one that turned 6200 rpm. first gear tow haul on. 3.73 gears and 305 baha claws. if you put 4.56 gears in you can shift second but you'd want around a 265 tire.

Just kind of thinking out loud, could you use the hypertech to change the tire size to say a 36"-38" tire to fool the computer to think you have the lower gears? Or wouldn't that matter, is that option just to correct the speedo?

8.1s have good power.

Id find a way to up the RPMs.

Then do as many traction mods as possible.

iirc tierod was saying that the vlv spring float about 4500-5000rwpm range.. not really good.

efi live would help with rev limit and reduce the tq management as well.

probly want to get soem tierod sleave as well ;)

x2.If you put it in third the tranny will just shift back and forth.

i have pulled with diesels before and beat some.the ones that beat me was hopping and turning the front tires and moved the sled a few more feet.
i think i have plenty of power to go to at least 2 gear but i dont want to hurt the tranny. i dont want to do many mods just because i might pull one or two times a year but i dont want to break anything eather. i am planing on getting a tune and sleaves sometime.

Around here, they have St. Legal gas classes. Most of the time, an 8100/Allison would clean house if there was one there. With a chip and some prep. you should be competitive.

honestly my 8.1 wasn't stock and i couldn't swing 2nd gear with 3.73's even 4.10's wouldn't have been enough. i used to turn it around 5500-5800 and never floated anything.

Your tranny should be fine. While the 8.1 makes tons of power. Its the torque that kills them, which the Duramax has plenty of.

YOu should be fine pulling once or twice a year.

Id get sleeves. Strap the centerlink. Lower the front and lower the air pressure and give er hell.
