Get Oiled

Note to all: Just had my 05' Chevy's upper steering shaft replaced at the dealer. Though I have 39700 mi. on it, they replaced it under warranty.
The new GM shaft has a plastic insert in the shaft, which will not need periodic greasings like the older versions, this is supposed to be a fix/upgrade from GM  :driver: So go ahead and call your dealer you might be able to get a new one for free :cool_shad
For those who can not,NAPA is supposed to have a shaft that's better than the original, for about $70
My GM shaft P/N is 19153614 :rockit:
I hope it will cure it. I am going to wait til the last minute before my 3 years is up and get mine replaced under warranty.

Did you or have you added the 2 dollar hose clamp to the bottom of the steering column just behind the green bushing? Works like a miracle out here on the oil field roads! Patch proven! Lol.

In March I had my steering shaft replaced it lasted about 30 miles, put up with until yesterday took it to the local dealer replaced it and some other things. It clunked as bad on the way home as it did before it was replaced,is there something in the steering that could be causing the noise.

Wk55, CK all of your steering parts. Jack up your front end & grab a tire. I have had to replace both upper control arm ball joints, & one lower, one tie rod end, two idler arms, @ 20,000 miles. I got to do both front wheel bearings @ 49,000 miles. Alaska is murder on this front end. Thats a big majority of the work done at the dealers up here. This reminds me I need to get off my can & put my Dana 60 under my truck, good luck.

Was everything tight up front? If it is your steering shaft my pal at the dealer said they have a new heavy duty steering shaft out but he hasn't heard back if it cures the clunk or not. Maybe worth checking into.

As stated above, $2.00 muffler clamp at bottom of steering tube cured mine after I installed the new shaft myself.

Yep. Same place, different clamp! I found you have to use a muffler style clamp to be able to tighten it up enough.

I got the new style shaft with the Teflon peice and no greaing put in and it laste about 8K and now clunks worse than the greaser ever did. POS!
I would recommend sticking with the old shaft and just have it regreased once a year.
