I have a stock 08 Duramax and I’ve been reading through the threads about code readers trying to decide if I need one, and if so, which I should buy. I think I’ve at least discovered that I need to carry one in the truck, but I’m still a bit confused about which one I should get, and exactly just what they can do for me.

I will be traveling throughout Baja California where there are no dealers or diesel mechanics to tow my truck to if there’s a problem. I either fix it in the field, or tow it back 800 + miles to San Diego. If the problem is fixable (by me) and I can identify what the problem is using a code reader, then I can work on getting the part brought down to me, or do whatever I need to, to get the truck moving again.

I’m not a mechanical moron, but I’m not a mechanic either. I’m learning, but I really know very little about the Duramax 6.6 LMM. To help me facilitate getting my truck back on the road (If I have a field fixable problem), which code reader do you recommend? I’ve looked at the Innova 3130 and the Dashhawk but it seems to me they have more features than I really need. Which code reader (that can clear codes) would you recommend for my situation? I would like something that can interpret the codes (rather than having to look them up) with the easiest to read interface to help figure out any potential problems.

Thanks

I am not sure on the code reader since I have EFI that can do just about anything.

But I will tell you to keep a spare air and fuel filter with you.

I wound up buying the Innova Scantool 3130. Seems like a good unit, still learning all the options.

I had to use it the first day. After installing a secondary fuel filter I forgot to re-install the air intake tube. Started the truck, put into gear and it went into limp mode. I immediately realized the problem, stopped the truck and re-installed the air intake line. The truck came out of limp mode and ran fine, but the check engine light remained on. I hooked up the code reader and it showed a emissions valve stuck open. I cleared the code and everything seems fine.

Question: Once a problem is repaired is it always necessary to clear the check engine light manually, or should it clear itself when the problem is fixed?

Since I cleared the code and it didn't return, is it safe to assume the problem was fixed by re-installing the air intake tube?

Thanks
