I wanna Convert!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/help.gif as per my sig, i've got an old chevy farm truck and i think my engine doesn't have more than 25000 miles left in it (burning a bit too much oil as it stands). i think that GM has 6.5 diesel crate engines and I'm wondering about the possibility of retrofitting my truck with one. my question(s) is would it fit? also, what would be required for a swap, and how much would it cost? is it better to just try to swap in a 454 (does that fit, I'm unedumacated)? yeah so how hord would i be for my truck to join the diesel club?

Sure - it is an easy bolt-in job.
You'll need the normally aspirated engine with mechanical fuel injection system - Inj pump and pipes.
Intake and exhaust manifolds are different-specific for turbo engine, but are interchangeable with n\a parts if you want a turboDiesel.
Exhaust system is specific to n\a or turboDiesel, very different than gasoline engine system., including no catalytic convertor.
Diesel uses an oxygenating, or oxidizing, convertor, to burn off the soot in Diesel exhaust gas.
(Prob'ly won't need that on the farm - it curdles the cow's milk, an' causes the poultry to lay boiled eggs);)
Find a '92-'93 donor Diesel truck for all the small pieces, which will nickel-and-dime you into submission.
Strip it, including wiring harnesses, instrument cluster for tachometer/glow plug indicator
Requires Diesel
hydro-boost brake assembly, hoses - no vacuum source with Diesel
accessory brackets
accessory drive pulley
20" 7-blade fan
throttle cable - 'bout a foot longer
flywheel\clutch or torque convertor
radiator\new hoses
rubber engine isolator supports
'92-'93 glow plug controller and harness
remove in-tank fuel pump - better, use Diesel fuel tank and lines
fuel lines for electric lift pump - has correct fittings
harness for lift pump
fuel filter\management assy with harness
drive shaft - larger, heavy-wall tubing
Or - find a Diesel truck with a bad engine, stuff it with the crate engine.

Unless you have alot of spare time on your hands, you might want to consider looking for a good used truck that has a 6.5 in it. You can find really nice clean good running trucks for a reasonable price these days. Whichever way you decide to go, take your time, do your homework, and good luck!:)

YOU're right GMCTD, pretty much a bolt in. If you find a donor truck in that year everything pretty much just a swap over, but I believe it will be cheaper to just find a truck with a factory 6.5 in it. then spend that extra money on making it all you want it to be.

One thing that was left out is that you want to swap over the fuel cap too!

Wal....I'm gittin' old an' tend to fergit thangs!
Like - both battery boxes and cables
external oil coolers, lines and brackets
water-drain spigot\bracket and hose
This Side Up decal for CDR can
Diesel Fuel Only decals (stickers)
Diesel Engine Cranking Procedures on driver's sun visor
Do Not Use Starting Fluids warning decal
Diesel Supplement to Owner's Manual
Not even to mention that front bumper with the two handy foot-stand holes in it - really helps when working on the engine
The list just goes on, and on, and on, and.....
But - it is an easy bolt-in job!;)
