If you are having a hard time getting access to the filter, remove the plastic wheel splash liner. Once you get the retaining pins out, the liner is easy to remove (and reinstall). This will give you great access to the filter. All the other info on the do-it-yourself article still applys, but it is now easier to get to the filter.

The pin consists of a larger pin with a smaller plug pin in the center. Get a small flat blade screw driver and use it to pop out the small pin from the larger pin. The small pin does not have to be completely removed, just pop it out of the hole. The small pin acts like a wedge to lock the large pin in place. Next, pull the large pin all the way out of the liner. It is a pain at first, but it gets easier each time you do it.

go to the do it yourself section and read that link posted above. Its super easy. bend the A/c line just a hair and you can take the filter out with no problems. unplug the wires on the bottom.

one caution..I had this problem and looks like someone else did as well.. teh stock filter is on SUPER DUPER tight..be VERY careful when taking it off. I almost crushed mine from trying to break it lose, but eventually it budged and came off. They are not supposed to be on that tight, just like oil filters.

good luck

hand tight and a quarter turn will do just fine and make future removal a snap.

The other option is to remove the battery to get access. Each option has its own trick and things to watch out for. If you remove the battery you have to remember that the + cable is hot even when disconnected. This is because it is wired in parallel with the other battery.

yes, take the splash guard off and get to it. i have always been able to get mine off by hand and put it back on by hand. never had a problem with my filter ever losing prime. i have a tendancy to overtighten things by hand and with tools. guess i have been learning my own strength.

If you go in through the wheel well and tighten by hand. After it is snug, just grab it with both hands and crank it. it'll be tight enough.
