I have an 04 lly and am wondering if I HAVE TO use Dexcool. Almost all the antifreeze jugs say they are compatible with all types of antifreeze.

HAVE TO? Of course not. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED? Yes.

I just bought Prestone Dexcool at Walmart and flushed/changed the coolant in mine. It costs a little more than the Prestone All-Makes/All-Models.

However, check the ingredients on both Prestone jugs and you'll see that they're the same. I have no idea if the concentrations of each ingredient or the ratios are the same.

I don't know anything about the other brands that claim to be compatible with all types of anti-freeze. Of course there are OATs, HOATs, silicons, and (does this still exist in North America?) phosphates.

The big suspects in past problems with Dexcool are hot spots in the engine (engine design), air, and not changing it after many years. I haven't heard of any gelling problems in the DMax even when they've been grossly overheated.

I have a diesel engine in a boat. On that forum the mechanics say the green and orange coolants are NOT compatible...don't know if that's for all engines or just that one. However, I'm keeping green in the boat and orange in the truck...not taking any chances. If you change from one to the other, be sure ALL the old coolant is removed before putting in the new.
