I'd post pics but I don't know how.
Take my word for it there was quite a bit of rust at the bottom of the filter.
The media was also totally black, not "gunked" up, little if any visible trash or particles, but still black.

None of my other filters looked this bad (I always change them @10K).
My next filter will be the new dual pleat. Should I be concerned? I didn't run any additives during the last 10K. I usually do run some every other tank or so.
Will running additives in every tank + the dual pleat filter solve my problems. I think I'm buying good fuel, the station sells a ton of it and none of my other filters looked this bad.
BTW, I don't have a secondary fuel filter, never felt like I needed one, maybe I do. I hope the dual pleated filter will solve some of the problem.

Any advice would be helpful.

Go back to the station and talk to the manager. Tell him your story. Find out how often they change their filters for the diesel pump.

I have never cut open any of my filters, so I have no idea what mine would be like. Run an additive.

Just another good reason for a Post OEM 2um filter ..... Eliminates any concerns.

I run the Nicktane Cat filter and at 20,000 mile change my factory filter was 1/2 used up, meaning it was black 1/2 way up and absolutly no water or rust were present. The Cat filter had about 2 Tbs. of rusty water in it and the canister was coated with rusty gunk. Goes to show that NOTHING gets past that Cat filter, it takes no prisoners. Just finished a long tow before the change and performence was up to par.

Yeah I have the Nicktante filter kit as well, Ive had it for 10k miles now. My truck does seem to run a little smoother. The only thing is that with an auxillary kit you have to run some kind of additive in the winter if you live in an area where it gets below 0 degrees. Otherwise these filter systems are awesome and will make your engine last a while

What is the new fuel filter number for the LB7. Went to the dealer yesterday and he said he did not know what I was talking about.

They sell Baldwin filters I have been running them for almost 6 years and have had no issues with them. They are Good People Too!:grd:

install a water seperator filter, can be found at any heavy duty truck stop, and drain often, then look for a better fuel supply, or setup a bulk tank, or install a aux tank to allow you to fill from a good supply, your diesels down their have a lot of free water, find one that does not, i have ran close to 100k on only 3 fuel fiters, and seen no rust at all, let alone lots, so it is out their, just have to find it, and i run stock filtration

how often do you guys change your cat filter? ive been changing my oem filter every 5000 miles. my nictane is on order, not installed yet. so how often should i change my cat filter once i do have it installed? and does that mean that i can push back changing the oem filter to say every 10 grannd?

I understand that the OEM should be changed at 10,000 miles.

i suggest you change the cat filter at 15-20k mi.

yes you can run the OEM longer, but that goes against gm's recommendation. personally i've ran one for 40k and it looked less than half used up with the big cat in front of it.

if you do run the oem for a long time, make sure to run a good additive. water seperators are only good for big slugs and do little for the 200-300PPM's of water..
