Hey guys I have an 03 chevy 6.6 dosen't want to start in the cold anything below -6c and i have to plug it in. I've had the fuel filter changed and they have tested it down at the dealers (which i'm getting a royal run around at) mostly cuz It's hard to bring it in when it won't run then when they get it and check it it's warm in there shop so everything starts ok. they say all the codes are good and injectors are ok and fuel and conditioners are up to spec. and now recently it's having trouble firing even in warmer weather 0c it just cranks and cranks unless i double fire the plugs which works a 0c but not at -6c or more any ideas?
TIA
ps i have no addons or modifications just towing package and dual batts

I saw one and the wires that went to the glow plugs were loose. Tightened them up and all was good. Not sure if your problem is the same, but this was the case on one.

i would check all the wires for the glow plugs. then if not adding any additives, I would add some. Double check the priming of the fuel filter. maybe air in the system. we have been noticing more forums finding holes in the filters making the trucks lose prime overnight.

Run a fuel additive of some kind in your truck, though for most poeple it isnt required it cant hurt. Run one such as Powerservice Diesel Fuel Supplement when its really cold, and run the occasional bottle of Diesel Kleen when its warm to clean things up. If that doesnt help go to the GM dealer and ask, its supposed to be able to start in sub zero weather.

I had the exact same trouble, to every detail. The dealership even told me my injectors were fine. In the end, they weren't. 8 new injectors. Now it jumps to life in 1 second even when -30.

I have an 03 duramax, with 35k. I just experienced the same problem this last week. If I let the truck sit over night, it would start in the morning, run a few seconds and die. then would not start. I had to prime fuel sytem to get it to start. During days it would start, but surge. I found that the oring on the plastic plug that you loosen to let the air out of the system when you prime it was bad. I had to buy a whole new plug since the dealer did not sell orings for it. $14 for the plastic Scew..HIGHWAY ROBERY... Anyway starts and runs fine after I changed the plug.. Anybody know if you have to have a neoprene oring on this plug, or will any old rubber oring work? I hate to pay another $14 if it happens again.

I have a 2002 and the same problem it would be fine all day long but if i let it sit for 7-8 hours it would start and die !!! Just picked up my new screw from the dealer today ( 25 dollars canadian ) but before i got " screwed " i useed a different o-ring ( buna ) noting it made the problem worse !! I will let you guys know tomorrow morning when I go to start the truck if the new one did anything !!!

2002 cc s/b duramax loaded and tones of toys!!!

My fuel filter loses prime after running for five minutes, is it supposed to be rock hard all the time? I'll try a new screw as mine is pretty buggered up from all the bleeding I've been doing lately.

Thanks

):h I'm with Caswell on this one. Starting last fall as it got cooler, I noticed longer crank times, even when warm. The truck sits at my office all week at whatever the temperature may be (-5C to -30C). On Friday afternoon, I park the company car and go to start the truck. Last two winters....no problem. Lots of noise and smoke but it always starts. This winter....no way. Have to plug in it for 4 hours and then get the office battery booster out to help. Several cycles of the glow plugs and more often than not...no start. Finally got fed up and took it the dealer. 8 new injectors. Now, it's like new. 1 second cranking and it's running. All under warranty. Gotta love it.....

Ok guys I just bought (20 days ago) a 01 and its seems to be having the same problem. It is 15-20F and the truck will start for a few seconds then die and wont restart. I cycle the glow 4 times and still the same thing just cranks and cranks. When it does start it sounds like its a big block with a huge cam, lopes pretty bad. I'm not sure if I can get it covered under warranty because I dont know what I should be looking for injectors, glow plugs, or the bleeder screw. where should I start? Love the truck not happy with the problems already.

Thanks Mark
