I misplaced my owners manual.Can anyone provide me with information on how many gallon tank my truck has. Its a 2004 GMC 2500HD crew cab short-bed DIESEL pick-up.

Pretty sure all shortys are 26 gallon and all longbeds are 34...someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

you are correct

if you have time on your hands, 2 more in the fill tube (top off)...

lots of time, heck i've only been able to fill mine that far 1 time before and I think I was there for 10 minutes doing it.

If it is taking 10 minutes to top off then you could be doing it wrong.

I top off every time. Only way to ensure that I am calculating correctly.
This way you know how many gallons you really used.

To top off don't pull the trigger all the way.
(granted there are the nozzles that are all or nothing but they can be worked too)
Just enough that you get a steady flow without a lot of foam.
Pull the nozzle out enough that you can see as to not over fill.

Works every time for me.
