This mount is a very good alternative for installing gauges in a plainly viewable spot. I used this mount, as it is easily viewable when you check your rearview mirror. No need to glance anywhere else ... just seemed more logical to me that the overhead console, etc.
For those that have never done this before ... if the pyro leads and boost tubing are not a minimum of 12 feet, then run these down the passenger side from the mirror mount, as they will not reach if you run them down the drivers side. The Autometer Z Series that I used, have only 8' lengths of pyro lead and boost tubing. I called Autometer and they will send out a 10' pyro lead wire for free. The boost tubing can be purchased at any "complete" auto parts store.
I learned this the hard way ... I purchased a wiring loom for the gauges lighting and power and added the boost tube and pyro leads into the loom and did the old tape loom job to make it all 1 neat package. When I got to the engine compartment, the boost tube and pyro leads were way too short to reach (yes I did pre-check and I knew it would be close but had visions of it being OK). Now when the new 10' pyro lead gets here from Autometer, I will install a NEW boost tube and pyro lead, running it all down the passenger side and then into the engine compartment.
NOTE: when speaking with Autometer, they told me that the pyro lead wire is a special high nickel content wire, that can not be soldered or extended and stay within the proper tollerances for the pyro gauge. If you do extend or solder the wire, it will render it way out of specifications and give you erroneous gauge readings. So if you have extended an Autometer pyro probe wire, then you should not trust the readings you are getting on the gauge.
I hope that this helps anyone else that will be doing a guage install. I sure wish I would have had all of this information BEFORE i did all the work, which I have to do AGAIN
Yes, the over the mirror is a keeper ... I would buy it again! I didn't paint it as the black fits in perfectly with the mirror and the black on the windshield (2004.5 CC).
