My belt fell of a couple days ago. i purchased a new belt, put it on and noticed the power steering pump pully was coming off. i took the power steering pump off to try to fix it. i can hammer the pully back on but i see no way to tighten any nut to keep it on.does anyone know if i need to by a new power steering pump or if i can fix this one. Thanks, Dave

DO NOT HAMMER IT BACK ON! You will damage the internal parts of the pump. These are a tight press fit and requires special tools to remove the pully and install. If the pully is loose on the shaft something is worn-- you will have to replace the pump and probably the pully.

yes they are a press fit so either pumpshaft is worn or pulley but most likely both. For a quick fix put some high strength permanent loctite on it and it will get you by till you get the new parts. Hell it may even last forever depending on high loose it is. I have loctited mating parts that had .005 clearance and it is still holding. Make sure shaft and pulley bore is clean before the loctite is applied!

Same thing happened to me. Repressed pully. Came off again 60 miles later. Remember you will lose brake boost along with steering. Not a good feeling when on highway. Sugest you replace pump and pulley. Not a bad job. Also flush your p/s fluid mine was dark brown should have been clear. Good post at this site on how to do it.

Mine did the same thing, stranded me 150 miles from home. Drove to an Independent shop had pulley pressed back on, made it back home. Then came off again. My fix was to press back on and stick a thick washer and bolt in the end of the shaft that you use to press the pulley on with. Now have 30K with bolt holding on and no problems. My pulley was still fairly tight to press back on. This was the noise mine has had from day 1 when i would turn the steering wheel a certian way it would growl at me. The pump shaft adn pulley show sign of where they have worked against each other and dis figured the metal. The pump is fine just waiting for it to die and i will change pulley and pump. 192K and still running fine.
