: EGT temp while towing

I was curious as to what your egt's are when towing. With what I have on my truck in my sig, when towing our tt, which weighs around 8-8.5k loaded and on the hwy going about 60-65mph, my egt's are around 900 on flat ground with no headwind and oat around 70-75. Even on a slight hill the egt's will hit 1050-1100. I know with the bigger tires the rpm is a little bit lower, but this seems just a little high. My rpm's are some where around 1500-1600 at 60ish. Do any of you just lock out O/D when towing at this speed to lower your egt's? Or is this all normal? When towing, my edge is set to level 1. Thanks, Jerry.

Don't quote me, but I wouldn't be concerned about EGT's until they get above 1350, even then, if it's just a short time, I really wouldn't think twice about it. Chris

I tow a bit heavier (13K, and on flat ground mine stay in the 960 range. When going up hills (Grapevine, I15 towards Vegas) I have seen mine get as high as 1400. The 1400 is only for a 1-2 minutes, then the tranny will downshift and the cool down to about 1300 if it's steep. Going up the grade to Hunington or Shaver Lakes is a good example.
BTW - Have seen your truck out and about. Alot of gassers and PSD's compared to the D/A's running around, so I always take a look.

X2...I tow quite a bit over the Grapevine and out to Vegas with my car trailer at ~12K pounds and my EGTs are about the same on level highways. When I start pulling grades, I shift to 4th and my EGTs stabilize between 1200 - 1300 degrees at 55 mph.

No expert by any means, but as others stated above, I wouldn't worry about hitting as high as 1250-1300 for intermittent spurts during climbs under hvy load. Temps you are running are nothing to even think about. Happy towing!

Thanks guys for the responses. We are going up to lake lopez for a week for the 4th of july, so I will try the o/d off hting and see if I get any better mileage and egt's. Jerry.

I tow about the same weight as you. I tow with the edge on level 1 and would be about 950 on flat ground and 1200-1300 up a hill. I usually lock out 5th gear with the o/d when in a hilly area. Seems to keep the egt's down.

I also tow about 8500lbs (5th wheel) that also pushes a bit of air , I always see about 850-900 towing I-5 flat and 1100 on hills, my truck is an 03' so we're at 1800prm at 60mph. Hills in 4th gear seem to show about 1000 degrees.

This is a good thread....:)

From what I'm reading, you can spike to 1350 w/o damage, but how hi do you guys think the EGT's can got for longer periods of time? I pretty much always seem to drag my 5th wheel into the mountains, and I'd like to know what I can do without hurtin' my baby.

Thanks, guys!

I believe GM says you can run it at 1350 all day, but I have not seen it documented anywhere.

I'll run 1350 up the steep grades before it starts to de-fuel. 1350 tends to be the temp I don't hit for too long but, there are some hills that it is there for a little while.

My Edge is on level 2 and I've got the Attitude set to de-fuel at 1350 so, it doesn't go higher than that.

Is that on flat ground or going uphill? Jerry.

Just installed mine on the passengers side manifold, at the back end of the manifold last night.

Tuggin' the rig to So. Utah this weekend, so I'll post up how my EGT's went.

i just bought my truck at the end of feb. and it is completly stock, should i be worried about my egts towing a trailer since i have no way of monitering them. should i get something that moniters this in the future.

i wouldnt worry about it since your stock, but then again i can hit the 1300* range pretty easily with a head wind and the trailer in tow.

OK. I was surprised to see how quickly the EGT's would rise. Most of the time, I would be around 800-1000, and they would climb when I hit a hill.

Now, the PPE programer kicks ass! I was able to pull a hill at 70mph that I fell to 45mph with my big-block gasser. It was awesome.

On some of the climbs, the EGT's would go over 1400. The highest I saw was 1450, then I backed off.......

I gotta program my edge insight so the warnings kick in a little sooner......Otherwise, I'm stoked for the set-up.

If you,re going to be towing, stock or not, get (at a minimum) the EGT guage. You would be suprised how fast temps go up even with a stocker!
