I reported last week that I have been experiencing some stalling on truck and was instructed that it could be the starting of PMD failure. I was driving around this weekend and have another report. What is happening is that truck will be driving down road and not necessarly stall but complete lose power almost like running out of gas. And no I wasn't running out of gas. I this what is meant as stalling during PMD failure

I had a MATCHLESS thumper, years ago - 500cc 4-stroke single.

It would crank-start in one kick, or it would kick me over the handlebars.

Had a 50-50 chance, each start.

My back-flips weren't quite as impressive as that rookie race-car driver's - I think the landing poise has quite a lot to do with the quality of the showmanship...........

Btw - The Fuel Solenoid Driver in your hand becomes the Pump Mounted Driver soon as you attach it to the Inj Pump.

Btw btw - might change that duramax bit to p muthah dmax to represent it's manly truckworthy-ness;)

turbo junkie, rule # 1 check to see if you threw any codes. we cant properly diagnose a problem unless you check to see if you threw a code. if you want to guess at the problem it could cost you a small fortune. you will be replacing pmd, ops, and lift pump, and it may not be the problem. if you don't know how to read codes you can find out how at kennedy diesel.com look under 6.5 tech tips. this has helped me out of a jam or three.

Generally, when the PMD is the culprit, its like some one reached over and turned the ignition off, truck just dies immediately, no stumble no nothing. What your describing sounds like drawing air to me, or severe fuel filter restriction, or lift pump quitting on you, or fuel cap is not venting properly, something along those lines anyway.

Bow is right though, its a 'Tronic vehicle, need to get a scanner and see what the PCM says.

I didn't throw any codes yet. Well I mean if throwing a code throw causes engine service soon light to come on. If I can throw a code with out light coming on then I will check that.

TDG,

That is exactly what is happening. I'll be driving and truck just acts like it shut off. There is no stumble or hesitation just nothing there.

Does it sometimes not start right back up? Diagnosing a PMD failure can be tricky, they don't all fail exactly the same way, sometimes they quit, and you can't start right back up for a min or two, sometimes they do start right back up, sometimes they do both. If it were air/vapor lock etc, then it would not start right back up, or start and die immediately. If it were a PMD if might restart and not die for a while...'while' being 5 mins to a day and a half ;)

So far can restart immediately. I did notice the few times it has happened the tempature has begun to heat back up, I am assuming higher temps will lead to failure.

Higher temps can aggivate a failing PMD yes. If you can get a scanner on it, and have someone monitor the CTIME when the engine shuts off you can know for sure. If the reading drops to 0.00, then its the PMD, if it stays consistent then you have a different problem.

torbo junkie, tdg is most likely correct on this one. pmd's are a tricky animal. one thing i found out the hard way is diagnosing pmd's ops's, and lift pumps. failing pmd's usually don't throw codes. after all the aggrivation i just keep a spare pmd and ops in glove box just in case. the pmd i bought on e-bay pretty cheap and an ops is not that expensive to purchase and keep with you. it may get you out of a jam someday, and also helps to troubleshoot. since you have a pmd cooler it should be easy to swap driver to see if it is your problem. p.s. dont forget to keep ops socket also. hard to remove without it.

PMD is on the way. I also have a friend with a scan tool and will go for a ride with him to see if I can get thing to stall. Thanks for all the help. BTW it has happened it a few days now. Freaky
