Sorry about this non-diesel question, but I have not been able to find this info anywhere else and I'm hoping someone can answer this question. I purchased a 97 GMC SLX 6.5 TD back in December. The truck is running great and I've had a few good posts here. My question is, the truck has power door locks which work fine when using the door switches, however the remote door lock controller that the seller gave me does not. I bought this truck from a used truck dealer and when I phoned him, he suggested I change the battery in the remote. I did, and it still doesn't work. I phoned the dealer back and he suggested that there is a sequence that you have to go through in order to program the remote to the truck. I have searched the internet, but have not been able to find any info other then some posts for an Evoy which did not work when I tried it. Can anyone tell me if there is a reprograming sequence that must be performed after a battery change of the remote? Thanks.

1. Ground pin 4 to pin 8 of the Data Link Connector (DLC).
--The receiver will respond by locking and unlocking the doors and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds .

2. Press and hold the "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" buttons simultaneously, on the first transmitter to be programmed, until the locks cycle (approximately 10 seconds ).

3. Repeat step 2 for the second transmitter to be programmed (if available).
--The receiver will respond by locking and unlocking the doors and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds .

4. Remove the ground applied to the DLC.

5. Transmitter operation is verified by locking and unlocking the doors and activating the rear window release

This is from AllDataDIY.com, so it should be correct (basically the same as the factory shop manual....)

The remote should continue to work even if it or the vehicle loses power, they may have given you a remote that did not belong to the vehicle in the first place.

Thanks for the rely GMCfourX4, I think that is the correct info, as some else had described a similar method to me earlier. When I connect pins 4 and 8 together, the locks do cycle, however holding the lock and unlock buttons down for 10 seconds does nothing. I suspect I have a bad remote. I'll try to get a different one from my dealer and see if that helps. Thanks for the info.

Is there an aftermarket remote available for these trucks? I have lost both of my remotes and GM wants too much for replacements.

you could check on ebay for ones with the same numbers on back, if you want GM remotes. Or ask around to see if any vendors here can get them.

that is the correct method as described by the dealer that sold me my truck. I only got one remote with my truck. If I add a second remote, does it have to be identical to my original remote? Same frequency??

I had the same problem when I purchased my truck but dealer didn't have a remote for me so I ordered on from whitney for 31.00 and installed myself. took about 10 minutes, and all connections can be made in drivers kick panel except for power. Remotes look similar to factory whats not to like since dealer wanted 68.00 for each remote and another 40.00 to program.
