well went on my 1st big tow, phila to chicago about 8 to 9k load.. about 1/2 way to chicago truck became real lazy no power..starting huffing black smoke the whole way and of course milage went to hell... just got back unhooked trailer got on the pedal and still huffs real bad... any ideas? truck only had 1,200 miles on it when i left phila:mad: ... next question all the extra fuel being dumped what are the chances of hurting bearings, rings? i know it not like a gas motor the gas will wipe rings and bearings out ,but what about for a diesel... truck is going to dealer tomorrow
by the way bone stock no programmer

I suspect it maybe injectors. Do you have anyway to read boost? Maybe your turbo isn't workin right....thats another option.

1st thing I would check is all of the hose clamps on the boost tubes...before and after the intercooler. I checked mine and found them to be a little loose. You may be bleeding off gobs of boost and that is wny you are getting so much smoke and so little power.

On edit, could you hear the turbo whining at all? Or did you hear an unusual whooshing sound coming from the engine? If you couldnt hear the turbo whining, then I would really be concerned. Another thing to inspect is your air filter. If it became very wet some how, then it would clog up and not let any air into the engine. If it was raining really hard and you went through some large puddles that created large splashes, it's possible that your air filter is clogged.

thanks bart... turbo is still building boost... nothing got wet..it has to be fuel problem or a pcm problemCensored so much for making good money going to chicago spent 400 on fuel:mad: 1650 miles round trip

probably bad fuel. are you running any additives? I would first treat the tank and then change the fuel filter. if it was bad fuel, then you may have damaged the injectors by now from the contaminants.

i would suggest to try and start using additives in your fuel such as stanadyne or primrose.

Run FP-60 every tank along with LC-20 in the oil. Read up on www.bobistheoilguy.com

Additives wont do a thing to help dirty fuel. If was really dirty, then the fuel filter may be plugged. I would see how that looks first.

any check engine lite? I had a similar problem a while back with a truck and it turned out to be a turbo vane position sensor. I had a truck towed in last week with lots of water in the fuel ran like junk, missfires but no smoke. usually with black smoke its an air restriction or no boost. post what was wrong when u get it fixed good luck John

got a phone call from stealership today... service writer said tech believes bad fuel,to fill tank up with new fueland try...well after storming up there after the phone call and talking to the shop foreman and threw $400.00 in gas reciepts at him from all the fills since it started to smoke... he said yes something is not right to use that amount of fuel in 1600 mile trip....he hooked up tech 2 and saw a fuel temp sensor code in history at 1400 miles which is about 200 to 300 miles into trip in which the smoking started... think he needs to fire his tech!!!!!

unfortunately we went on a test drive together and of course its not smoking now...go figure...he said they will get a fuel temp sensor and call me to bring it in...

as i am a tech myself (not a diesel tech) i understand there are intermittant problems...but when you see a code in history that goes along with the complaint with the same milage... wouldnt you consider that being a problem?

i use a snap on modis and not too familiar with tech 2 does it store mileage when code is set?
thanks for your time...
