Can you run natural gas instead of pane in a syssem like a ps2000 for example?

I haven't done it, but I know you can. It takes alot more cng than lp, because it is alot lower in BTUs. I would like to experiment with it, because I have free gas at our house. The problem is the compressor that it takes to get enough in a tank to be of any value. They cost over $5K. We have a CNG refuel station in town, I think it sells for $1.19/gal. They don't actually sell it by the gallon, but the pump converts the units to appear that way so people can easily figure mileage and cost. It is actually sold by the cubic foot since it is gaseous form. It ranges from as low as 750 btus/cu ft to as high as 1500, depending on what part of the country it is in. So, let's say you have gas that is 1000 btu/ft. If gasoline is 123K/gal, it would take 123 cubic ft of cng to do the same distance as a gallong of gasoline. So the pump squirts 123 cubic foot of gas into the car and calls it a gallon. Anyway, other than the tank taking up alot more space than an lp tank to go the same distance, it is perfectly good to accomplish the same goals. Extra power, quieter operation, cleaner burn.

I may have misled you on my response. I know you can use CNG on a diesel. I didn't mean that the PS system could be used without modification. You would have to have a high pressure regulator ahead of the PS regulator because it runs as high as 3600 psi tank pressure. You would probably need to run alot higher pressure going into the engine or alot bigger jet to get enough gas to make equivalent extra power. LP has 2500 btu/cu ft, more than twice the btu density of natural gas.

Anyone ever tried acetylene? High fuel value compared to propane.

Wait, where's Ratlover when you need a potentially *kaboom* event? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif

I'm sure you could do it if you were really careful, but it would be very expensive fuel. Certainly would want an EGT gauge that is accurate and goes to 5000° F!

Havent done it......would need to make such modifications to a pane set up that i think it would be easier to peice together your own to be effective. I duno though, i havent investigated that. You can run CNG in a vehical easy enought though and depending on the isze of your city you may likely have a filling station in town. Give your local gas utility CO. a call. Getting enough gas flowing to it wouldnt be a problem.......we may have a couple old mooneys that have been yanked from service laying around.):h Same storry, not as much BTU as diesel and not as much as propane. Might be a lil safer and less likely to go bang before it should though.....

lotsa busses run it instead of diesel

You house is probably only feed in inches or a few pounds at best so if you dont have a local filling station its going to be a PITA to get fuel.

I looked into running my lp stuff on cng several years ago. A company called Fuelmaker in Canada makes a compressor that will pull from your house line (6 oz pressure) and compress it to 3600 psi for your car. It does the equivalent of 1 gal gas/hr. Last I checked, it was $5100. So even if you have free gas like we do, it is a pretty hefty investment. There are getting to be more and more cng refuel stations, so it might be viable if you have a good size tank and don't live too far from one.

It would require many other components and high pressure regulators to run CNG. I am not sure the horsepower and fuel mileage benefits would be there the way it is with propane. Is that why you were asking? Most dual fuel applications run propane and diesel. Costs, expense of system, etc.
We use a version of the Powershot system to inject methane, but it is not the only unit in the apparatus. They use them in oil fields, collect the methane, run it back through the engine to save on fuel and limit pollutants.

Methane eh? So you could make a custom driver's seat with a hose in the center...
