I remember when cats first came out and everyone was wooried about getting checked by the emmissions police....... we used to gut them so it was still there but was empty so no restriction. Why can't we just do that now? Save some bucks and still get it done.
Has onyone tried this?

I sent my cat and down pipe to a guy from this site, I wont say who cause I dont have his permission and it wouldnt be relevant anyhow. But, that was his plan, to take mine, cut it open, gut it, shut it back up and put it on. I think its a great idea and the way to go if you are concerned about someone noticing its absence.

I just switched pipes because it was less effort, and if I had to I could always put the original pipe back on easily.

i am working on gutting mine and welding a pipe within it. after i am done with mine, i will re-install it and install my mbrp pipe on my cousin's truck so we can do his. Otherwise, I may just go with a 4" mbrp system from the turbo back since i have hte downpipe (intermediate pipe) already.

i am working on gutting mine and welding a pipe within it. . What is the purpose of welding a pipe inside, would that make it flow better by creating less turburlence inside the empty cat cavity?

i believe it just makes it just like a straight pipe. i believe that you will have some exhaust tumbling around in the empty cavity without it, as it appears to me.

Bad Bad very Bad idea......if you should have to replace the cat for warranty work its gonna cost you big time....those things ain't cheap.

why would i have to have it for warranty work. if there are no codes showing an issue, and the cat is visably there, then they wouldn't ask nor check. you would have to really look to see my egr blocker plate and finger stick. you would have to know what you are looking for in order to find it. i am very particular in my installs.
as for the pipe i will place within my cat, i'll open it from above. when i weld it back and grind everything down, it won't be noticable by touch as they can't see up there anyhow.

There is a trend towards emissions improvements. I wouldn't be suprised if Michigan brings back the emission testing required for vehicle registration. That's why I spent the $130 now instead of $500+ for a new cat later.
