Has someone posted a list of the symptoms of injector failure. I would like to be on the alert to these symptons before any damage to other parts of the engine can occur (i.e.cylinder wash)

Excessive smoke could be white which is unburned fuel,Knocking, longer than normal starting.

Don't forget about higher than normal oil level

Most often will begin by hotter running temptures and reducred fuel milage. As injectors get worse you begin to see puffs of smoke at idle and on acceleration. Symptoms will get progressively worse until she just runs like *&^%it. 6 of 8 injectors failed @ 61,000. Got all replaced under dealer's tab. Good thing for warrenties.

Thanks guys for the input. I am experiencing poor mileage (10-11mpg hway) right now and it feels like not as much power.
Can the dealer do a quick diagnostic to tell me?
Should I remove my Juice box and monitor before going in there?

Sudden decrease in power and mileage. High fuel return rate.

not to get off topic too far, but if I were to bring my truck to a dealer with my Edge/Attitude still in the truck for warranty work, and the dealer refused the warranty because of it, could I go to another dealer w/o the edge/attitude and try it again? Or do they log it into some GM nation wide data base that I have alterered/modified my vehicle in some way. (sorry about the run-on sentances)

Take it to the dealer ASAP ricky tick quick if it starts sounding like a powerstroke...

No $hit, either. Mine sounded just like a powerstroke before the #7 cylinder was filled with fuel and cracked the piston and rod. DING DING DING New engine, courtesty of GM!

I have a 2003 Silverado 2500HD D/A. I got the Banks Six Gun/Speed Loader, Exhaust, K&N Intake,285 BFG AT's, Code Alarm. Ive had my truck since August 04', some things ive been seeing come out of my tailpipe are starting to scare me. Sometimes when its colder at intermittent times (not always) there was some blue some coming out of my exhaust, more recently (saturday) I had my chip up all the way and i think i saw some white smoke though im not sure. I added the nicktane kit to help save my injectors. I thought this was a heavy duty truck? I baby this thing more than any vehicle Ive ever owned. I run power service diesel Kleen in a 200:1 ratio (the max dose), I change the oil every 2500-3000 miles and Im using AMSOIL synthetics! can anyone tell me what is wrong with my truck? thanks

Well, in reply to the nationwide dealer thing: YES. The service record GM has for my truck, up here in alaska, reflects every service I've had done by GM on the truck, including the engine replacement under warranty.

I'm sorta iffy about even bothering with replacement stock injectors... if they start going out this time I'm probably calling Kennedy and getting a set of his aftermarket ones...

Mine acquired a ping. Sounded like a spark knock from my 1998 Dodge 1500 with the 5.9 Litre engine running standard unleaded going up a hill.

When they test drove it they could not hear it, but then they hooked it up to one of their gizmos and the test showed the # 7 injector was failing. They drove it again and heard it. They replaced the injector today under warranty.

Truck has 39,000 kilometers on it.

Mainemax, i was not aware as you that all the dealers were connected. A service in one state shows up in others. If for some reason i was not able to get the juice off before my truck had to go in and it was seen by the dealer that would be bad. Hopefully they don't or wouldn't take the time out of their day to go back to the computer and key in that i had a programmer.

THat would be a kick in the nuts :nutkick:

Mine was poor idle while in gear. My brothers Predator showed injector balance rate was all over the place. Once off of idle they cleaned right up at -.82. I had all 8 replaced last week and it is running like new again. The tech said #1 was just about shot.

Driving home last night from work, I had really poor oil pressure???

Its at the dealer now, we will see what happens next...
I did strip off the edge stuff, just the thermocouple left behind.

It is standard for GM to replace all injectors even if only one is bad right??

I had to request that they do all eight. They said normally they don't but those are the ones that seem to repeat offenders. Easier fo them all at once then come back for another tear down etc..

Well everything turned out great. The dealer changed all 8 per bulletin 04-06-04-007.

Mainemax,

Was it just the 2002's and 01's that had a large number of injector problems and pertained to that bulletin?

Thanks Chris

The bulletin covers all 01-04's. I believe there is thread under TSB's on here that shows it.

I just went out today to put my Juice/Attitude back in, and the bastards clipped my thermocouple off. Plus, they got grease on both sides of the fenders. I was pretty happy with the service I received, but then to find stuff like this really puts a bad taste in your mouth.

I would say somthing about the thermocouple... thats just bad practice if you ask me...

Excessive smoke could be white which is unburned fuel,Knocking, longer than normal starting.Oh-oh. I've been seeing some white smoke when sitting at idle. The smoke's not too bad, however, it is most definately there. If I power brake to about 800 RPM, it gets a little thicker and blows a little further. When I take off from a stop it seems to go away.

Mileage hasn't been too bad, 12-14 around town w/35" tires. I haven't noticed any hard starts, louder engine noise, or knocking....

I've been trying to tell myself that it could be the Hypertech.... (I changed from 90 HP to 50 HP to try and make it go away - not much difference), I just removed the cat last week -- maybe that's it....

I've been running Stenedyne (sp?) for about 400 miles -- still smoking....

Now I read this & I'm supposed to take off to Mammoth tomorrow morning for 4 days of fun -- probably 1000-1200 miles round trip ... am I in trouble???? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

Agghh!!

If the injectors are going bad will that come up on a diagnostic check? I got poor fuel mileage and it pulls like crap, even a 3,000lb load.

srode
04-04-2005, 05:40 AM
Yep, it can be found by looking at ballance rates on injectors.

I never got an SES light. I noticed poor mileage (10mpg) and I smelled fuel in the oil. My oil level was also above normal. I also noticed a lack of power and low oil pressure.

I never did notice a lack of power when mine went out, and I was over 22,000 lbs gross, and pulling in the Smokey Mountains. Oil pressure declined just before they went out, went all the way to 20psi, ideled in gear like it was on 2 cylinders, high oil level, oil on passenger side wheelwell, and smoked while being worked hard. I also only picked up about .5 towing mpg with the new injectors.

I think mine is out the way out also, I went from Santa Rosa CA to SLC 755 miles as I was sitting there BS'in I noticed lots of white smoke at idle, It was not rough idleing at all checked my oil level it was the same, the oil did not smell like diesel, I also thought, head gasket so I did some checking on that, So far I would say that is not the problem, I headed out to Arkansas then back home the hole time it did smoke when I was at idle or going slow, 4215.00 miles later in 3 days, I made it back home. my mileage was 17.0 on the way out with 2100 LBS in the bed. on the way back I got 17.8 with 500LBS in the bed, avg speed was 74MPH it was more like 85 but when I got to any town I had to slow down, I really lost the avg. when I got back into the bay area last night,
When I start up the truck in the morning its load also, and I did though a check light, I'm going to take it in soon to see what they can do

Just started noticing a white puff of exhaust smoke upon start, and it seems to turn over longer than I remember. So these are the symptoms of an injector gone wild? I am stock. Should I take it in for a checkup by the dealer?

All these descriptions of "knocking", "ticking", etc. but I haven't a clue what they really sound like! :banghead: I'd love it if anyone posted .wav or .mp3 files of the various sounds our engines might make.

Mine never knocked or ticked or smoked on startup before the injectors went. All this paranoia......when you see a little bit of oil on the passenger side of the block and PS wheelwell, take it in for injector replacement.

Mine does tick.....I just thought it kinda varied fron engine to engine. It doesn't run rough but the mileage and pulling power could be better. Does the ticking mean anything?
