: Need Ideas Please!
cpcycles 02-20-2005, 12:27 AM Hello,
I finally decided to tear into my intake to find my fuel leak on the filter. I removed all the intake bolts and discovered that the turbo vacume lines were under the black filter screw on cap. They wasn't letting the filter tighten up so that was my leak.
Decided to go ahead and replace the intake gasket as it looked like it was leaking. Removed the intake and handled all those issues.
Since I suspected my PMD to be failing I went ahead and removed it and made an extension harness. I bent a piece of aluminum and made a l shaped mount for the PMD to be located on the firewall. I also checked the transistor nuts and they were finger tight. I gave them a 1/4 turn then mounted the PMD.
Put the truck all back together and now it won't start. I went over everything I did and it is all ok....or least looks that way. I soldered all the connections on my PMD Harness so I know they are all good. All the sensors are plugged in and I don't have any codes being set in the computer.
This is really making me uptight. Does the PMD need a ground other than what is in the harness? I would assume it would be grounded by the attachment to the aluminum plate.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I stopped for the night because I ran the batteries down so will try again tomorrow after church.
Please Help.

quantum mechanic 02-20-2005, 12:32 AM It sounds like the FSD isn't grounded. The black wire that is attached to the top of the IP is the stock grounding location. It is comming directly off the IP from under the intake manifold where it is connected to the fuel solenoid.
Counting on aluminum for a good ground is a:badidea: .
quantum mechanic 02-20-2005, 12:58 AM When you made you're extension, the gound was the one wire in the harness that you didn't have to cut or lengthen, although, I've considered increasing the size of the grounding wire off the fuel solenoid back to the block, stock looks like 26 or 28 awg and it carries a -80 amp backlash as the f sol closes. I would think that if I added a grounding harness I'd have a big wire between it and the fuel sol.
qwestqaz 02-20-2005, 06:40 AM If you just extended the cable that plugs into the FSD, the ground to FSD REMAINS>
My extension has been running for 2 years with Heat sink ungrounded.
I do not believe the FSD has any ground other than coming out of the cable
( case is ungrounded ) I would not add additional grounds, other than that is in the harness., leave it wired as OEM. Additional grounds can CAUSE WEIRD PROBLEMS
with the PCM operation....
Your are just " extending " harness, not redesigning it ??????? correct.
quantum mechanic 02-20-2005, 09:20 AM I'm with you qwestqaz,
The FSD ground should have remained and no additional ground is required off the FSD, but I'm suggesting you can improve on what's there and provide a superhighway of grounding for the IP, and block back to the battery's - terminal, which would be a vast improvement in connection. A grounding harness is ideal for EFI systems.
gmctd 02-20-2005, 10:05 AM cpc -
Heat sink in FSD\PMD module should not make electrical connection to wherever it is mounted.
(Btw - a better mounting location would be in the passenger-side fender, directly in the path to the air filter box - always positive :cool2: air flow in that location.)
The thin heat-transfer pad is electrically insulative, Torx mounting screws pass thru epoxy-coated holes
FSD\PMD electronics is grounded via double black wire, pin F to FS solenoid and Inj Pump housing.
What QM is trying to say is the FS solenoid reverse emf is -80 VOLTS, and can be greater with longer harness.
That's the problem with being a point of light - light is very erratic in path and direction - requires a Fresnel lens to 'collate' and direct it, thereby making it 'coherent'...........

gmctd 02-20-2005, 10:55 AM ):h
Yep - I also need one to help read the TechII when I'm driving........
Remember those square flexible plastic sheets back in the 70's-80's - used to see them in the back door glass on vans and such?
Came in several sizes, 4" to 18" - sure would like to find a 4" sheet, would just fit the TII.
quantum mechanic 02-20-2005, 11:33 AM Where can I get a "Fresnel Lens" My path of light needs some directing. The arrangement of the amigdula and pituitary serve this purpose. That's where flashes of inspiration and other thought are recorded and re-projected in the mind as memories. The third eye if you will.
It's the halographic photon projector in your head. It gathers and relays light impressions from this physical dimension and from the innerspace light dimensions(all eleven of them). That's why people meditate, the brain relaxes to an alpha or deeper state of consciousness and the mind movies flow. What channels do you guys get? I keep it positive and get what I give.

cpcycles 02-20-2005, 12:53 PM I just posted a new thread because I wasn't sure if anybody would come this far and see the new question.
I don't think I am getting any fuel as I don't see any white smoke when cranking the motor over. How do I test to see if it is getting fuel to the IP? If the PMD is totally shot will the truck still try to run? Any insight is greatly appreciated and thanks for all the ideas above.

quantum mechanic 02-20-2005, 06:01 PM If you have pressure on the filter housing then the IP should have supply.
