I just came across a real interesting Oil Information Web site, They are doing live drive scenarios on cars, using different oils and testing the oil. It compares oils, test labs and has some handy-dandy calculators for predicting your oil change intervals based on lab results.

It's a pretty good site. I used the calculator based on my results from my oil test and it calculates I should be able to go 13K on the Chevron Delo 400 5W-40 I am using.


This is based on a virgin TBN of 11.3 from the Chevron Web site and my tested TBN of 10.6 @ 7000 miles.

Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it.

I guess by reading all the info one could make two determinations.


Synthetic is better if you want ( supposedly ) longer oil life, however to get there you have to spend more $$$$$$$$ on the cost of the oil, change the filter at least once and top it off to really benefit from the longer intervals, as well as spend the cost of at least 2 or 3 oil changes to establish a base line for your engine.


This baseline is good in my opinion if you drive the same style and in the same conditions daily. Any deviation from the normal such as heavy towing, extreme temps would have to alter results, IMHO.





As far as hurting the engine by changing the oil too much. I don't see how clean, uncontaminated oil is doing that. If it did then I guess my engine at 30K miles is gonna need a rebuild soon http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif.


My last 2500 truck was a 350 cid with 247K miles on the clock when sold......never used a drop of oil........3K-4K changes from day one....DYNO OIL, mostly Amalie 10w40 oil in it. When sold the engine was still going strong at 330K to the next ownwer almost 2 years after I sold it to him.
