Family and I went to see Gma this week since it was her 85th birthday. On the way down and back upon a slow down from hiway speed, the strong odor of sulfur came into the cab and could be smelled outside as well. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks for the help.

Catalytic converters give off that smell.

Egg truck wreck a few days ago?

Or, Sorry, :Whoa: I think that was me! :Whoa:

Catalytic converter on a gasoline motor would do that.

Check your battery's,one maybe leaking.Wouldn't hurt to make sure your system isn't over charging, what was or is your volt meter reading?

Thanks Mac

I did replace a battery today. Hope that takes care of it. Be good....

Like Mack said,

Double check your voltage, a smell of rotten eggs is usually caused by a battery being overcharged and that causes the acid to be boiled out and that gives off the egg smell.
Just replacing the battery, which might be bad at this point, might not fix it.
Check the voltage at idle and at the upper RPM's to make sure your not overcharging.

Batteries should be replaced in pairs. You should consider replacing the other one also.

Hey Mackin

I actually had replaced the other battery not 2 months ago, but I will have the voltage checked. What would be a range I would look for on the gauge? I have noticed it at hiway speed being up around 16 or so. Too high?? Thanks for all the helpful responses.

16 volts is too high the charging system should run about 14-15 volts when the engine is at highway speeds.

My truck did the same thing and I found the driver side battery had leaked out. Don't know why yet, the Optima seems to have gotten the gauge to read a little lower? It doesn't charge quite as high as it used to but it sure starts nice and quick! I probably should have replaced the other battery too but it was almost new from the previous owner and still has a 7 year warranty on it.

Should be under 15 volts. 14.? is the spec. Just want to make sure you don't Fry your battery investments and make sure you don't get stranded with a NO start when you least expect it. ;)

Went today and had the alternator checked. It was reading like 15.5 on the gauge but on the sun machine it was only about 14.5 and 40 amps. Alt. guy says I'm ok. He said since I changed the other battery that the older battery, being closer to the junction box it was getting those 40 amps and probably jumping to 17 volts and that is what cooked the cell. Thanks again for all your imput here.

Tulips are up in my front yard already. Grass will be green before we know it. The only thing that smells better than diesel smoke is fresh cut grass. :p:
