Well, after two oil changes my wimpy "regular" filter wrench broke trying to get those tight dmax filters off. I need a "manly" filter wrench (or at least one that works). Any ideas?
Thanks,
Todd

8" strap wrench works for me
should say handle is 8" long and strap is 1" wide

I purchased a metal end cap style at Pep Boy's that is used with a 3/4 in. socket handle or ratchet. This works fine. The first one that I purchased at Wally's was
made out of plastic and broke the first time I tried it. Can't use this on Baldwin B -1441 filters, though, as the ends are smooth--not fluted.

A big a$$ pair of water pump pliers works well. These are spendy, but nice. And the name is just a coincidence.

I have a pair of these as well.

KD Tools makes a nice heavy duty wrench.

I have never experienced the "too tight" problem. No, I am not bulked up on steroids. I am using Baldwin filters, tighten them as tight as I can get them by hand, then go another 180 degrees. The way I see it, if you tighten more than that, all you are doing is crushing the gasket.

They seem to come off without any extraordinary effort.

Go to your local CAT dealer. CAT makes a strap wrench that takes a 1/2'' drive ratchet, the strap part is 2" wide. I haven't broken one yet, even with a cheater pipe.

If you only tighten them one turn after the gasket contacts the head any good wrench will take them off. No! 100 PSI is not high pressure. Later! Frank

The OEm installed filters have been the only ones that give me grief. I tighten my filters by hand, and find that so long as the filter is hot, it will generally come off by hand as well.

I use a rubber strap wrench for the stubborn ones.

Just tighten 'em by hand, and they should come off by hand too, if it takes a wrench you know u tightened them to much. I do lots of oil changes, never had a filter leak cause it was not tight enough.

Seems to me you that in a pinch you could always punch an old screwdriver through the side to give you som leverage on it. Always works for me when I don't have the strap handy.

Used this method last week after reading about it on here. I broke my junker filter wrench and resorted to the screwdriver, which worked quite well I might add. However, what an F'in mess, and that chit was hot too! This method does work well but I think there should be some emphasis put on the "in a pinch", Id almost say as last resort.:badidea:
